Wallpaper Mural is
Easy, Fun to Do
A wallpaper mural gives a
distinctive decorator touch and
is fun and easy to do: It costs
very little and all you need is
a roll or two of wallpaper, scis
sors and glue.
Apply the mural to a wall
that is already papered with a
plain color or some background
pattern such as brick, grass,
cloth or textured effect.
A spray of leaves and flowers,
a scatter of cutouts, a swag of
fruit or leaves are all very ef
fective. Begin by cutting out the ivy
leaves (for example) and paste
the backs of the cutouts. Place
them on the wall, working out
your pattern as you go. You may
find it easier to plan your de
sign before hand, or keep some
basic shape in mind, such as a
reverse curve.
The effect will be completely

Better Lighting
Benefit to New,
Old Residences
Modernize your home with
fixture light for beauty, com
fort and safety! Both new and
old homes " can benefit from
better lighting.
Recent studies show that the
average home today has only
10.9 fixtures worth a retail
price of S44.10. For adequate
lighting, that figure should be
25 fixtures worth $210.
That S178 difference is one of
the most important investments
a family can, make for its own
safety, increased comfort and
enjoyment; Here are the rea
sons: 1. Practically every home fur
ishing and decorating accessory
must be seen to be enjoyed.
Without adequate lighting col
ors, textures, form and design
are lost in shadows or glare, and
th effect is wasted. Good fix
ture lighting is the handmaiden
of good decorating.
2. Light is essential for many
home comforts such as: food
preparation, eating, reading,
sewing, recreation, shaving and
makup. Down light from in
stalled fixtures provides the pro
per level illumination to make
these activities comfortable.
3. Inadequate lighting ,is the
cause of many home accidents;
especially in the kitchen, halls,
stairways and in the bedroom.
Overhead fixture light provides
the necessary illumination.
You can save a lot of house
work and re-painting by install
ing a ventilating fan in your
kitchen or bathroom.
Formica Inspirations for New Interior Decorations
Formica is the inspiration for
new tricks in interior decora
tion thanks to newly discover
ed adhesives and techniques.
The use of Formica on the
walls is not new, but the latest
methods of installation open up
a new realm od ideas for its use.
Formerly the only recom
mended method of installation
was to veneer the Formica sheet
to plywood and then attach the
entire slab to the wall. This
meant that part of the work had
to be done in a shop equipped
for veneering.
Now the Formica sheet can
be installed directly to the exist
ing wall surface. This has been
made possible through the dev
elopment of a new Formica ad
hesive" for on-the-job installa
tions. Today, with this simplified,
faster method, home owners can
look to this practical and at
tractive material as a decorative
element in home design.
The use of Formica is no long
er limited to insitutional build
ings and counter tops. Now -it
can be tilted on edge and glued
to the wall to achieve a num
ber of unusual and modern dec
orative effects.
Formica can be a p p 1 i ed to
plaster. Wall surfaces, including
rough coat plaster which has
been steel troweled. It also ad
heres to plywood, masonite or
poured concrete.
In new construction the sim
plest, most economical and sat
isfactory base is to nail li-inch
plywood directly to the studs.
In old construction, where the
base has deteriorated, it is best
to cover the existing base with
U-inch plywood before install-1 ica blocks and planks. Where
ing the Formica. seams are exposed, new color-
A number of interesting pat- blended Formica moldings are

FORMICA STRIPS As shown here, "Formica" strips were cut
and bevelled and installed, one strip or plank at a time . . . the
same as for any "Formica" wall installation. If desired, open
joints between planks or blocks can be colored by wiping (not
filling) with enamel, stain, or any suitable coloring agent. By
Formica Corporation.
