Kootenai River Near Flood Stage
Spokane -UP.) The Kootenai
river is expected to reach its 31
foot flood stage at Bonners Fer
ry, Ida., Thursday but the situa
tion does not appear serious.
Meteorologist Robert Small said
today.
Small said the levees and
dikes at the north Idaho commu
nity were constructed to with
stand a water height of 37 feet.
However, he said there may be
minor flooding in the lower
farm areas.
Small said today's reading
was nearly 26 feet and a sharp
increase to about 28 or 30 feet
was expected tomorrow.
In recent years, the Kootenai
has overflowed its banks at
Bonners Ferry and caused con
siderable flooding and damage.
The water washed out and
topped most of the levees last
year, but Army engineers and
townspeople managed to keep
the water out of the city proper.
The Blackfoot river flowed
within inches of the top of the
dikes protecting about 100
homes in the Blackfoot, Idaho
area and flood control officials
were keeping a wary eye on the
stream.
The river, fed by melting
snow waters which poured in
from Sand creek, rose four
inches Sunday and Monday, and
city and county officials said
the area faced a possible threat
