International headquarters, is
very much
like walking
through Holly
wood' famous
Forest Lawn.
It'i lovely in
a somber,
death-like sort
of way.
From the
outside, this
a. sobt. smith marble m a af
terpiece rivals any modern ar
chitecture in all this beautiful
capital city. But on the inside, its
tasteful appointments, its expen
sive drapes that are drawn
against the slanting rays of the
afternoon sun on the great pan
els of glass all of it is over
whelmed by an uncomfortable
stillness that one seldom finds
outside of tombs.
Aclive Press Room
Even a fairly active press
room that has just been estab
lished on the second floor to ac
commodate newspapermen, com
plete with chattering news tick
ers, fails somehow to penetrate
the solemnity of the place.
The men who have been hired
to man this Teamster publicity
bureau, all of them ex-newspapermen
of considerable repute,
are doing what they can to shat
ter the gloom. Their efforts are
the first fruits of the public re
lations campaign Beck's union
has belatedly launched since the
Teamster boss and certain of his
top subordinates have become
entangled in the coils of the U.S.
Senate and the law.
A month ago, a reporter try
ing to get legitimate informa
tion from the Teamster .head
quarters, was shunted from one
officer to another, each passing
the buck ad infinitum rather
than admit they couldn't pro
vide answers.
Answer Quicker
The three-man press staff now
on duty for the Teamsters
doesn't come up with any more
positive information in response
to the vital queries of the day
such as where are Beck's asso
ciates hiding out from Senate
investigators but a reporter
gets a negative answer quicker,
at least.
The general pitch of the Team
ster public relations campaign,
run by an expert of the craft,
David B. Charnay of New York,
is that the criticism of the
Teamster officials is motivated
by broadscale anti-union inter
ests. In other words, their effort
is to convince anyone who will
believe it that the Teamsters'
enemies in their current trou
bles are the traditional enemies
of all labor and all working
men.

that he would launch a $1,000,
000 "truth campaign" to tell his
side of the story, right after he
passed up a two-day opportunity
to do it for free before the Sen
ate racketeering com,mittee
where he had a TV audience.
But Teamster Secretary-Treasurer
John F. English, the man
who has prevented the union
treasury from being tapped by
Beck for a payment covering
the luxurious furnishings in his
Seattle - residence, threw cold
water on this by saying that he
wouldn't approve the funds. The
result was a- compromise figure
of $200,000 annually, which
could be extended into a five
year program if the Teamster
convention approves it.

Charnay's press agentry has

Who says there's no way out for

crowding? Not Herb Kurtz.
The 45-year-old civil engineer
recently decided California wai
"too darn crowded." Many
would resign themselves, but
Herb just up and took off for
Tahiti to try and buy an island.
To accomplish this, he held
talks with the governor of
French Oceania to discover
which of the isles in the Tua
motu Archipelago group were
available for lease or sale. Final
reports aren't in yet.
When he left Sacramento, he
went alone. As soon as the land
problem is settled and a house
is built a house put up by Herb
himself his wife, is going to
join him. And they've talked
four other local couples into
going along, thus setting up a
colony on the island.
A Surveyor
Is Herb going to go native?
Well, at least part of the way.
The dwelling will be a hut. But
food problems will, in part, be
solved with the most modern
packets of vegetable seeds, pre
sented to the adventuresome guy
by a city seed firm before he
left San Francisco aboard the
New Zealand steamship Waito
mo. Herb thinks he'll be able to
take at least some of the vittles
out of his dream isle's rich re
sources. "I think I'm bush-wise," he
said. "I've spent years survey
ing for the federal- government
up on the Canadian border."
He isn't taking anything for
granted, though. If the Tuamotu
deal falls through, he plans to
go south to Rapa Island in the
Tubuai Archipelago and try
again. The whole area is semi-
tropical with a year-around tem
perature of some 72 degrees.
There are plenty of wild boars,
vegetation and chickens.
Loves Nature
How about cost? Herb expects
he'll be able to lease a 10,000
acre island for $250 every 10
years. And it took only $1,260
to outfit himself entirely for the
extended jaunt.
His traveling equipment in
cluded first aid materials, in
cluding drugs and antibiotics,
guns, fishing gear and all the
odds-and-ends it takes to put to
gether a 10-person village. All
this was packed into three over
sized wooden crates.
Kurtz pointed out that his
"big move" isn't anything
against his home state at all.
"I love California," he ex
plained, "but it's just getting too
crowded."
And this is no travel poster
inspired whim, for Herb said
he'll stay on the island "for the
rest of my life if everything
works out all right."
