Cancer of the Prostate Gland
Until" a few years ago, many
physicians doubted if it was
worthwhile to try to remove the
prostate gland after cancer had
started growing in it. The diffi
culty in these
cases is that so
often, by the
time it is dis
covered, the
cancer has
spread into
the surround
ing tissues or
even out into
the bones of
the pelvis and
spine. Many a
man with cancer of the prostate
gets his first symptoms from a
daughter - growth (metastasis)
somewhere. Naturally, in such
cases, it is useless to try to re
move the original growth. The
surgeon can cut enough of it off
so that the man can keep urinating.
Now, Drs. R. D. Turner and
Elmer Belt, of Los Angeles, re
port that with an extensive oper
ation which removes, trfe cancer
ous prostate gland and the sur
rounding tissues, 43 out of 131
patients appear . to - have been
cured.

Drs. H. A. Dickel, and H. H.
Dixon, of the Department of Psy
chiatry of the University of Ore
gon Medical School, in Portland,
writing in the Journal of the
American Medical Association,
reported their studies of the ef
fects of tranquilizing drugs on
8,200 patients suffering from
anxiety. They warned that the
drugs can do harm, and hence
should not be taken carelessly
by patients on their own. Some
of the people became so de
pressed that they felt like com
mitting suicide; some suffered
from toxic reactions, and others
suffered from serious emotional
conflicts.
The psychiatrists doubted if it
was wise, always, to free a per
son entirely from worry or con
cern. They say a . person too
greatly tranquilized can become
of little value to himself or his
community. The drugs certainly
should not be used indiscrimi
nately, without medical advice
and observation.

er has induced Flynn to write
about his colorful life, including
his adventures on ships, his in
trigue in the Spanish Civil War,
his rise as a film star and his
unequaled off-stage reputation
as a casanova that resulted in
two rape trials.
"I won't be pulling 'too many
punches," promised the0 man of
letters as he rested from his
labors with tequila in one hand
and a cigarette in the other over
his dictating machine into which
he reminisces during the film

the knees now," said Flynn.
"They're passing the hat around
just so I won't drop their names
in my book.
"How do I do about getting
this book banned in Boston?
What I need now is a staff of
lawyers."
Flynn at first cautiously plan
ned to finish his' book with
events around 1940 "when I felt
that hand clamped on my shoul
der," his arrest on rape charges.
"The publisher," said Flynn,
"viewed this suggestion with
dismay. He wants ' the rape
trials included and I could
write plenty" about the truth of
that. But if I leave that out I
could end my book with the
notice to tune in for the next
volume.

Flynn claims he's writing his
book with' no help from a col
laborator; The debonair actor
has two published books to his
credit. .
What the title of his memoirs
will be, Flynn hasn't decided. j
"I'm trying to think of 'an
ecclesiastical title because I
hope this will be a work of gome
merit," Flynn said.
