The Family Council
Editor's not: The family Council consist ot )udf, a psycnlatrllt,
tn'ee clergymen, a newspaper editor, a women's editor and two writers Eacn
article is a summary ol an actual report. The Family Council does not live
advice; It merely reports on problem that have been dealt with by responsible
afencles and counselors.
Victor D. I want my son to
go to my college.
Peter D. What all the rah
rah about?
Viclor D. My ion, who is
nearly 17, is planning his col
lege applications and a serious
disagreement has arisen be
tween us.'
I have looked forward for
years to his going to my alma
mater. It is one of the best
schools in the country and has a
particularly godd department in
the field he is planning to enter.
Besides, I have a strong senti
mental attachment to this place.
I spent the happiest years of my
life there. I am sure he would
too.
Peter has disappointed me
deeply by flatly 6tating he
wants no part of this school. I
left behind an excellent repu
tation and I can't understand
his refusal to establish a sort
of family tradition by going
there.
Peter D. My father Insists
upon taking it as a personal in
tuit that I don't want to go on
to his college. I realize it is a
good school and I want to please
him, but he refuses to recognize
that I have my reasons for want
ing to choose a different school.
I have been away from home,
living in boarding schools since
I was 14. Most fellows like to
get away from home to go to
college, but with me it's dif
ferent. I could live at home if I
went to the school I've chosen.

I can't understand why my
father should be so stubborn
about this. I don't believe in
all this family tradition stuff
anyway and I've told my father
so. What's all the rah-rah about?
The Council Peter's casual,
matter-of-fact attitude toward
something that has strong emo
tional content for his father is
confusing the issue. Peter
should recognize that "family
tradition stuff" and "rah-rah"
are important to mature persons
because they desire assurance
of continuity.
It is not simple stubbornness
that makes his father press his
point so strongly but love for
the boy who bears his name and
the desire for strong and mean
ingful ties with him. Peter
should give full and serious con
sideration to his father's wishes
in this matter. '
On 'the- other hand, Victor
should recognize that the tie of
having his son go on to his
college is a rather superficial
one, as compared with other fac
tors. It is far more important
for Peter to go to the college
he wants, not only .because his
chances of success will be better.
He has one strike against him
when he is not completely en
thusiastic at the start of "his
eollege career.
Peter gives a very good rea
son for not wanting to go to. his
father's college. He is not being
simply contrary. His desire for
a home life should not be
thwarted. If Peter lives at home,
his father will be even better
able to share those college years
with him and to strengthen the
ties between them. There is so
much to be said for letting Peter
follow his own inclinations in
this matter that Victor should
not let a misplaced sentimental
ity obstruct the important issue
Peter's ultimate happiness.

On The Side By e. v. Doling

Do you know who furnished
the inspiration for the origin of
the canned food industry? It
was none other than Napoleon
Bonaparte who offered a prize
for a method of preserving the
food of an army on the march.
This inspired a Frenchman
named Appert to originate the
process of canning. There is a
wider variety of prizes being
currently offered than ever be
fore in the history of the world.
However, the majority of win
ners benefit only individually.
There should be more prizes of
fered for ideas, such as food
canning, that will benefit the
public in general.
Husbands
Discussing the subject of hus
band selection, Elsa Martinelli,
highly glamorous Italian actress,
said, "Italians are good men to
marry. When my father was 50
years old he still brought flowers
home to Mama. He still tried to
look handsome. He was still
jealous of Mama. Isn't that won
derful?" Insurance ' .
There are about 200,000 life
insurance agents in this country.
So says a statistician. That fig
ure surprises me. I thought there
were that many in Brooklyn.
How are you getting along with
your life insurance agent? Ask
him if he knows the song by
Frank Crumit titled "Nobody
Has Endurance Like The Man
Who Sells Insurance.'.'
Forgotten Man
Everybody knows Mike Todd
produced the film titled "Around
The World In Eighty Days." Who
directed it? Not many can an
swer that offhand. It was a bril
liant young Englishman named
Michael Anderson. He is Holly
wood's forgotten man of 1957.
That Mike Todd is a very clever
fellow, nobody can deny. But he
certainly knows how to monop
olize the spotlight. When he con
trolled the Del Mar race track
there were more pictures of him
in the papers than the horses.

Queries from clients. Q. What
is the origin of the expression
"The Real McCoy"? A. The orig
inal expression had nothing to
do with the fighter "Kid" McCoy
as is often claimed. It was not
"The Real McCoy" but "The
Real Mackay" and was used by
Scots in connection with the
judgment of the quality of a type
of wool. That's the way I heard
it. Q. Who was the star of the
musical show titled "The En
chantress"? A. Kitty Gordon, the
statuesque beauty known as "the
girl with the beautiful back."
She also introduced that touch
ing ballad titled "There's A Lit
tle Spark of Love Still Burning."
Asidet
In several announcements as
to accommodations available to
visitors to Las Vegas, Nev., I
note "Divorcees Welcome." Are
there places in Las Vegas where
divorcees are not welcome? If
so, why? . . . In battling for
their rights cigar smokers are
making some progress. Cigar
smoking is now permitted on
several airlines. One line even
gives away after dinner cigars.
However, pipes are still barred.
Wild DriYtrt
Where can be found the wild
est automobile drives in the
United States? There is a great
difference of opinion as to that.
In this connection, it is inter
esting to note that not so long
ago in Long Beach, Calif., a man
was run over by an automobile
while he was having a pair of
shoes tried in a shoe store! The
wildly driven car came crashing
through the wall of the shop. .
