McCarthy Improved
But Condition Still
Considered Serious
Washington (UP.) Sen. Jo
seph R. McCarthy (R-Wis.) strick
en with acute hepatitis, a liver
ailment, was "improved" today
but still in serious condition at
the Bethesda Naval Medical
Center.
A hospital spokesman said
McCarthy had a "fairly comfort
able night."
"His temperature is normal,
and he is improved since he was
admitted Sunday," the spokes
man said. "However his condi
tion is still considered serious
at this time."
Fteling Better
McCarthy's wife, Jean, said
Monday night after visiting the
47-year-old senator at the hos
pital that he "seemed to feel
better."
She said the hospital's com
mander, Capt. E. C. Kenney,
reported he was "quite pleased
with the progress" McCarthy is
making.
The ex-Marine, entered the
nearby Maryland hospital Sun
day after an apparently sudden
attack. His secretary said he
showed no signs of illness last
week when he remained to work
at his capital office during the
Easter recess.
McCarthys illness took him
out of action at the very time
the ambassadorial nominations
of his old friend, Scott McLeod,
and his old foe, Ambassador
Charles E. Bohlen, came up for
consideration in the Senate For
eign Relations Committee.
McLeod, State Department se
curity chief, was once called
McCarthy's "man" in the State
Department. His nomination as
ambassador to Ireland faces
Democratic opposition.
McCarthy in 1953 led the at
tack on Bohlen's nomination as
ambassador to Russia. McLeod
aided McCarthy. Bohlen's new
nomination as ambassador to the
Philippines again faces opposition.

St. Raphael's Cathedral are still
on central standard time. They'll
continue to toll one hour behind
schedule until John Gunlach, the
sexton and only man in the par
ish who knows how to adjust
the bells, recuperates from his
injury.
