On The Side
By E. V. DURUNO
(Distributed by King Feature
Syndicate. Inc.)
Every morning during break
fast, in front of the fireplace, we
have a little music with the meal
by playing some of our favorite
records. Gets the day off to a
good start. What I consider one
of the most remarkable records
of all time is "Show Biz" and in
cludes the actual voices of all
the great entertainers and bands
of the years from 1904 to 1954,
inclusive. This record really
carries you down Memory Lane.
It is a good record collection on
one record. Here are some of
the singers you hear: Caruso,
Fannie Brice, Nora Bayes and
Jack Norworth, The Happiness
Boys, Gene Austin, Bing Crosby,
Perry Como, Helen Kane, Helen
Morgan, Morton Downey, Bea
Lillie, Sophie Tucker, Kate
Smith, Hildegarde, Ezio Pinza
and Danny Kaye. You hear the
original Dixieland Jazz Band
and the bands of Ted Lewis,
Paul Whiteman and Glenn Mil
ler. You hear Cole Porter sing
ing and playing one of his songs.
Also George Gershwin at the
piano. You hear dialogue by
Will Rogers, George M. Cohan
and Smith and Dale. All this in
terspersed with comment' by
that most brilliant of all Broad
way narrators, Georgie Jessel.
Getting Rich
Do you want to get rich? Are
you doing anything about it or
do you just dream you may some
day be an Irish Sweepstakes
winner or get the top prize in
the Agua Calisnte race track's
"five and ten" pool? From time
to time I am going to tell you
how some fellows acquired great
wealth. As for example, there
was that fellow who learned in
advance where Henry Ford was
going to build an automobile
manufacturing plant and bought
up real estate in the vicinity.
This he sold later at a huge prof
it and became a millionaire. This
reminds me that the Edison
Company plans building a plant
near Oxnard, Calif.
Love Letters
Most great love letters are
written by men. However, now
and then some woman displays
some talent as a romantic corres
pondent. As for example, Sarah
Bernhardt, who was a brilliant
writer of love letters. It was
Sarah who wrote to a lover,
"Paris without you, darling, is
like a clock without hands."
Asking
Queries from clients. Q. Who
was the originator of the saying,
"the first fine careless rapture"
and in what connection was it
used? A. It is by Browning. The
passage in which it occurs is
from the - poem titled "Home
Thoughts From Abroad" and
goes as follows:
"That's the wise thrush;
He sings each song twice over.
Lest you should think
He never, could recapture
The first fine careless rapture."
Horses and Women
As previously said, being en
gaged in an effort to understand
women, I take careful note of
grounds for divorce offered by
females. In Chicago a woman
seeking a divorce bitterly com
plained that her husband fre
quently took her over his knee
and spanked her. She weighed
250 pounds. The husband
weighed 160 pounds. What a

BUTTE FALLS
Egg Hunt Is Successful
By MARY JO HARRIS
Butte Falls Easter Sunrise
services started at 5:45 a.m. at
the Community church with
both churches participating. The
Rev. John Fuiten of the Assem
bly of God church spoke at the
special service. One number was
given by the volunteer choir.
Regular services were held
later at both churches. The Rev.
John Fuiten officiated at the As
sembly of God church and the
Rev. Howard Simmonds offici
ated at the Community church.
The annual Easter egg hunt
held at the City Park was a suc
cess. Children were put into
three groups; one through four,
five through eight, and nine
through 12. There was a prize
egg for each group and a prize
for the child finding the most
eggs in his group.
Winners of prize eggs were

Plumber Burns to
Death in Portland
Portland U.R) Alvin E.
Cozine, a 25-year-old Portland
plumber, burned to death early
Saturday and his two children
were injured in a fire which bad
ly damaged their home.
Police credited the quick ac-
t i o n of Special Patrolman
George Session for saving the
children. Sisson was cruising in
the area when he smelled smoke
which he traced to the Cozine
home. He pounded on the door
but got no response.
He called firemen who broke
in and rescued the children,
Cheryle Ann, 5 months, and Deb
rah, 2Va years. They were tak
en to Emanuel hospital. Officers
said they had been overcome by
smoke.
Firemen found Cozine's body
in the kitchen where he had col
lapsed in an apparent attempt to
fight his way out of the house.
Mrs. Cozine had left to take a
baby sitter home and she didn't
return until the children were
being put in an ambulance.
man! But how did he get his
plump wife over his knee?
Simplicity
It seems that every day the
public prints report that some
body somewhere is trying to
break a will. The more simply
worded a will is the more diffi
cult it is to break. As for exam
ple, the following will in which
a very wealthy man left every
thing to his daughter. It read:
"All that is mine when I
am dead.
Goes to Jessie Enough said."
