What is it? It is a hereditary
disease that shows up in small
children. Their bronchi, or tubes
carrying air into and out of the
lungs, are blocked by an abnor
mal spcrction of mucus. Some
limps this causes obstruction of
lhr air tubes with infection and
death. Besides the lungs, the
pancreas (the large digestive
gland in back of the stomach),
tlu sweat glands of the skin,
and the salivary glands are in
volved. A new test has just been de
vised in which all one has to do
is to touch the surface of a
specially prepared plate with a
hand or foot, and if whitish dis
colorations appear immediately
it means that there is too much
chloride in the sweat. This is
characteristic for children with
this disease. If they haven't any
excess of choride in the sweat
thy are not likely to have the
defect.
Some of the infants who are
affected with the disease are
able to live into their teens or,
rarely, into thfir 20s. Often it
is a constant fight to keep the
child alive with antibiotics. Only
about one child in 600 is affect
ed by the disease. Fifty per cent
of them do not survive past the
age of 5 years. The trouble is
transmitted by parents, each of
whom carris a trace of the ab
normality. In some families as
many as four out of five, even
five out of five, children will
have the disease.
Diagnosis Difficult
So often when a child is born
with this disease the diagnosis,
for a while, is difficult. What
the child seems to have is some
bronchitis, perhaps with allergy
or asthma or what is known as
the celiac disease. The common
est symptoms are chronic cough
with repeated pneumanias, and a
diarrhea, often with , bulky
greasy stools. A child may have
