Identification of
Hubcaps Planned
By Wheelers Club
A "hubcap identification pro
gram" has been started by the
Medford police department in
cooperation with the Southern
Oregon Wheelers, a hot-rod club,
because of an increased number
of hubcap thefts in Medford, ac
cording to City Police Lt. Jack
McMillan.
Four members of the wheelers
hotrod club will mark hubcaps
for local residents between 12
a.m. and 6 p.m. May 4 and 5
in the parking lot behind the
city hall, Fifth st. and Central
ave., Medford, McMillan said.
Identification marks will be
applied to hubcaps at no cost
to owners, he reported. He added
the marks will be applied by a
vibrating engraver making
marks permanent and still ident
ifiable in event they are filed
off.
Does Not Detract
The police lieutenant noted
that the engravings does not de
tract from the beauty of the
hubcap. Surveys in cities where
the program has been tested
has shown 75 to 80 per cent de
crease in auto accessory thefts,
he said.
McMillan said the hubcap
theft problem is increasing in
cities throughout the country,
and has been particularly bad

Reason for tbe increase in

easiest crimes to commit. Other
reasons are their high monetary
value and the fact that establish
ing rightful ownership is almost
impossible, he said.
The problem has become so
acute that some insurance com
panies have been forced to at
tach riders to policies excluding
coverage for such accessories as
hubcaps, according to McMillan.
It is hoped the identification
program will make stolen hub
caps traceable and discourage
handlers of stolen goods from re
ceiving hubcaps, McMillan said.
National Program
On Confab Agenda
A broad nation-wide program
for the improvement of plumb
ing and heating equipment in
existing buildings will be pre
sented at the annual convention
of the Oregon State association
of Plumbing and Heating Con
tractors at the Medford hotel,
Medford, May 3 and 4.
Speakers will stress the fact
that the modernization of plumb
ing and heating equipment is a
protection to property values
and offers a means of halting the
deterioration of houses in 'older
neighborhoods.
Another subject to come be
fore the convention is a program
for the training of more appren
tices to provide a pool of exper
ienced workmen.
Other subjects include tech
nological advances in the plumb
ing industry, the research pro
gram sponsored by the National
Association of Plumbing Con
tractors, labor relations, public
relations, merchandising, and the
protection to public health pro
vided by plumbing codes.
