Exploring caves is mountain climbing in reverse and is usually done in pitch darkness. (A camera flash is used here.)

Exploring a cave may not be your idea of fun, but to many iff an exciting challenge.
Speleologists spelunkers' scientific name get set to explore Crystal Cave dis
covered by Floyd Collins, who later was trapped and died while exploring nearby.
Claustrophobia and a large waistline have no place in caves. Passages sometimes
narrow to crawl space, then open on a cathedral-like cavern never before seen.
Vsk a speltjnker why he
loves to explore caves, and his
answer probably will be, "Because
they're there."
And that's a good reason, because
spelunkers go hundreds of feet be
low the earth's surface to wander
around in darkness lit only by their
carbide lamps, crawl through tiny
passages, suffer bats flying in their
faces and have a wonderful time.
To be a spelunker, your health
has to be excellent and you'll be
happier if confining places don't dis
turb you. The rewards are many:
seeing nature's underground won
ders, obtaining scientific knowledge
to be found only in caves, and the
adventurous feeling of "being some
where first."
These pictures show a party of
spelunkers exploring Kentucky's
Crystal Cave, which was discovered
by Floyd Collins in 1917. The sym
pathy of the entire nation was fo
cused on Collins in 1925 when, for
nine days, he was trapped in nearby
Sand Cave and died before rescuers
could reach him.
