From the Library
The Medford Public library
has made a special effort during
the past year to build up a col
lection of hks that will offer
reading of interest, variety, and
quality to lys and girls in their
teens. To shelve the more than
200 books vrritten especially for
young people and purchased es
pecially for their enjoyment a
special browsing stack has been
ftt aside at the library.
Duplicate copies of almost all
titles have been distributed
among Jackson county branch
libraries. During the past two
weeks 21 new titles were added
to the "Y," or Teer Section, ti
tles that include romance, ad
venture, sports stories, science,
and biography.
The total number of volumes
added to the library during the
two-week period was 405, of
which 105 were gifts. Donors
were Edmund E. Haas, P.
Tucker, Dwight Houghton, Char
les McDonald, Jean Davis, Mrs.
A. B. Hinck, and the American
Legion. One hundred fifteen new
titles were placed in the junior
department, 134 in the adult, as
follows:

Mountain Passes to
Open Earlier in Area

according to W. C. (Dutch) Wil
liams, state highway engineer.
The three are McKenzie high
way, the east and west Diamond
Lake highway, and the Mt. Hood
highway between Government
Camp and Cooper's Spur, Wil
liams said.
Plowing operations are sched
uled to start at both ends of the
highways April 29, making them
open to traffic about May 17, the
highway engineer said.
Normally the McKenzie high
way is open about June 1 and
the Diamond Lake highway
about a week earlier, Williams
noted. A snow pack estimated at
only 70 per cent of normal has
hade the earlier snow removal
possible, he'added.

linda Lee's long blonde hair was
four inches shorter today. It
caught fire from a candle during
the filming of a movie scene
Thursday. Miss Lee was burned
slightly.
Great Decisions
Groups to Meet
Members and leaders of the
"Great Decisions . . 1957" dis
cussion groups in Jackson coun
ty will meet at 8 p.m. Monday
in thr courthouse to evaluate the
foreign policy study program.
An estimated 200 persons in
Jackson county informally
studied United States, foreign
pol'cy during January and Feb
ruary, according to Mrs. John
Ousterhout, county chairman.
Charles O'Brien of the Foreign
Policy association, the volunteer
association which encouraged
the Great Decisions program,
will attend the meeting. Warren
Rovetch, also of the association,
will be present at a similar
meeting In Grants Pass Monday
night.
All persons interested in the
Great Decisions program have
been invited to the meeting to
express their opinions and to
aid in future planning, the chair
man said.
The study program was car
ried on throughout Oregon with
help of the general extension
division and the state extension
service, with many other , co
operating groups and agencies.

friend at St. Joseph's hospital
Thursday when he had a pain
