Hewitt celebrated their 61st
wedding anniversary April 12.
They were dinner guests of their
daughter and son-in-law and

theirs on Charles and his family
in Council Bluffs, la.', and nu
merous cards and congratulatory
messages from their neighbors

Funeral services for Walter
Love were held Friday in Ash
land and committal services
were at Central Point. Mr. Love
had been barber in Phoenix for
several years. He had been ill
for some time.

DDT Said Effective
In Controlling Snakes
The early day system of cir
cling a bedroll with a braided
hair lariat or riata may have been
effective in keeping rattlesnakes
away from camp. Most people
would like to keep them at a
greater distance and where can
one get enough braided hair
rope?
The modern way is to control
the snakes so that they will not
return. A technical release en
titled "DDT for Snake Control"
confirms the observations of sev
eral Jackson people who tried
out this system in 1950 with ex
cellent results. The article states:
Successful Control
"Several members in the mid
west have reported, successful
control of occasional snakes in
buildings through the use of 50
per cent DDT tracking powder.
In areas where DDT can be
safely used, the 50 per cent .
tracking powder should be ap-
plied , lightly to surfaces which
the snakes will contact if they j
find their way into buildings.
"Snakes should be controlled
by chemicals only as a last re- j
sort. They have their place in ,
nature and are beneficial to some ;
extent, for they feed on worms,
slugs, insects and rodents. The 1
use of DDT dusting powder' for ,
snake control may be used ;
where the problem cannot be j
solved in any other way. It
should be realized, however, that ;
a thin layer of dust required can
be hazardous to pets and chil
dren and that it should never
be applied in any manner which
might result in the contamina-;
tion of food." j
Local seed growers have used I
DDT for insect control (lygus i
bug) for many years. Snakes,
frogs and toads have not- been
observed in seed fields of lotus,
alfalfa and clover previously
treated with DDT. Fish are eas
ily killed by light dilutions of
DDT in the water.
In 1950, C. C. Hoover leased
seed producing lotus, alfalfa and
clover fields in the-Table Rock
area that were known to be in
fested with rattlesnakes. DDT
sulfur dust was applied to these
seed producing fields for two
purposes; first, to control injuri
ous insect pests such as lygus :
bug, spotted cucumber beetle
and thrip, that definitely reduce
seed yields to all legume seed
crops, and second, to kill the :
rattlesnakes that may be a haz
ard to the people employed in
harvesting, operations.
No Live Snakes
It is interesting to note that
no live snakes were found in
any of these fields from the time
the first dust application was
made in June until August 16,
1950, when an accidental fire
burned over the upper Table
Rock area.
Hoover recommends that DDT
be formulated with dusting sul
fur for more rapid action on both
injurious insects, as well as
snakes. DDT sulfur dust was ap
plied in this case by airplanes.

graduate of the University of
Bristol, England, will arrive in
Ashland June 12 and remain un
til Sept. 3. Miss Evans will work
as an assistant stage manager on
the productions of "As You
Like It," "Othello," "Two Gen
tlemen of Verona," "Henry
VIII," and "Pericles."
She is in this country to study
American ways and means in
theatre under Rotary Interna
tional's exchange student pro
gram. The student is now doing
graduate work at the University
of Georgia's department of
drama.
While at Georgia she has
served as assistant to the direc
tor and stage manager of sev
eral productions, including "An
astasia" and "Picnic." In Eng
land she has been a stage mana
ger for a number of University
of Bristol productions.
