Former Reclamation Commission
Head Endorses Rogue Project

Need for the Rogue River Basin

lamation commissioner arid an
interior department assistant
secretary.' who commended Rep.
Charles O. Porter's "action and
energy" in advocating the proj
ect. Congressman Porter has an
ounced his intention to intro
duce a bill to authorize construc
tion of the remaining features of
the Rogue River Basin reclama
tion project , i

Straus follow:
' "Your action and energy in
connection with the opportunity
to achieve for your area a full
and comprehensive multiple
purpose development of the
Rogue River Basin was most re
freshing and pleasing to myself.

"Over the years as a Recla
mation Commissioner and an In
terior Department Assistant Sec
retary, I have long studied and
been familiar with the Rogue
Basin opportunities and possibil
ities and on numerous occasions
discussed them publicly and
privately with the citizens of the
area. It is my conviction that in
the Basin there is an almost un
paralleled opportunity to achieve
highly - beneficial basin -wide
multiple purpose development.
In fact, the benefit-cost ratios
worked out officially over the
yean show a higher proportion
of benefits to costs in the Rogue
Basin than in any other compar
able basin with which I am fa
miliar in the country.
"What has been needed for so
long is a representative from
kt area who could bring this
fntter before the Congress for
otion. That representative has
apparently now arrived in the
person of yourself, but it prob
ably is in order for me to advise
you that the task will not be
simple and easy. There will be
lethargy if not outright opposi
tion by the administration, which
has neglected its responsibilities
in the Rogue for the past five
years.

cubic inch V8 engine identical

With the conventional four
barrel carburetor the output is
255 horses at 4,700 rpm and
torque is 345 pounds-feet at
2,600.

cobra at the Bronx Zoo Thurs
day set a record for laying eggs
in captivity and also a record
for consistency. The cobra, which
laid 56 eggs Thursday, laid 41
on April 25, 1955, and 51 on
the same date last year.

we are in full agreement. As

groups devoted to recreational

posed to this basin development
for other special interest purposes."
Residents May Have Survey
To Solve Drainage Problem
Officials of the Jackson Coun
ty Health department have urg
ed residents having drainage or
surplus water problems to con
tact the department for a survey
of conditions and possible solu
tions. To those interested vm mosqui
to control, officials recommend
ed reading an Oregon State col
lege agricultural experiment sta
tion bulletin entitled, "Sugges
tions for Mosquito Control in
Oregon." The bulletin is avail
able at the experiment station
and at the county agent's office.

Following is a quotation from
the bulletin:
"Since mosquitoes require wa
ter for- their development, any
procedure that eliminates stand
ing water will reduce mosquito
annoyance. Elimination of breed
ing areas includes ditching, dik
ing, filling, leveling, brushing,
clearing and control of lrnga
tion water. Many
swamps and tidal flats can be
successfully ditched and drained'
to eliminate mosquito breeding
permanently. Ponds and low de
pressions can often be drained.
"The cleaning and straighten
ing of meandering streams and
partially filled ditches should be
a part of any mosquito control
program. In irrigated sections,
good leveling, proper use of wa
ter and quick removal of excess
water are essential. Water must
remain in a pond or ditch or on
the land for a week to 10 days
during midsummer, and slightly
longer earlier in the season for a
brood of mosquitoes to have time
to develop." -
' The mosquito hazard is becom
ing worse every year, officials
stated. In view of the fact that
use of chemical control is of
limited value, it is suggested that
a program of permanent control
be developed immediately. Such
a prDgram would have support
