Nellie Fox Key Contributor
In Fast Start of White Sox
Br MILTON RICHMAN
United Press Sports Writer
Casey Stengel says Al Lopez
is "too good a manager to keep
finishing second all the time,"
and judging from their jackrab
bit getaway, the Chicago White
Sox are bent on proving Ole
Case a phophet.
Off to his best start in his last
five years as a manager, Lopez
has the White Sox in first place
with five victories in six games.
"I said I felt we could win
this year before the season be
gan and it still goes," the White
Sox declared following Thurs
day's 9-4 victory over the De
troit Tigers.
For the Leader
Leading the way for the
White Sox at the moment is lit
tle Nellie Fox, with his custom
ary wad of chewing tobacco and
a fancy .423 batting average.
Fox was a key contributor in
Thursday's triumph over the
Tigers with a pair of doubles
and a single. Southpaw Jack
Harshman was credited with his
second victory although ancient
Dixie Howell took over for him
in the seventh. Steve Gromek
was the loser.
The Indians, who started poor
ly this year, defeated the Ath
letics 5-3, even though they
were held to six hits. They broke
a 1-1 tie in the seventh with a
three-run rally that was high
lighted by Vic Wertz's two-run
double off loser Wally Burnette.
Early Wynn was the winner but
he gave way to Ray Narleski
after yielding a two-run homer
to Gus Zernial in the eighth.
Ted Williams continued his
torrid hitting for the Red Sox
with a double and two singles in
a 12-7 decision over the Sena
tors. Williams' three hits boost
ed his average to .455, best in
the American league. George
Susce Jr., yielded three hits
over the last 5 23 innings to

Pilot Selected for
Flight Into Space
Edwards AFB, Calif. (U.R)
Veteran test pilot Scott Cross
field has been selected to test
flight the forthcoming revolu
tionary X-15 rocket research
plane which is expected to pro
pel man into the true realm
of space for the first time, it
was disclosed today.
Crossfield, daredevil pilot and
aeronautical engineer for North
American Aircraft, thus looms
as a space travel pioneer who
will soar higher and faster than
any other living human being
heretofore. The ultrasonic bul
letlike ship, now being construct
ed by North American, is ex
pected to reach altitudes far in
excess of 100 miles and speeds
faster than 4,000 miles per hour.
The daring 35-year-old flier,
although under strict security
regulations, said the date of the
X-15's first flight was not yet
known but that he believes it
might be next year at this base.
