Neckwear Trend Is
Toward Restraint
The trend in neckwear toward
more restrained patterns be
comes more pronounced for
spring, reflecting the renewed
interest in patterned fabrics for
men's suits and shirts.
Many light ground colors will
be shown in new neckwear and
there will be more interest in
whites and silvers.
Reps and foulards will remain
favorites with Ivy League par
tisans. Some bolder patterns will
be available to complement some
of the new dark suits.
Bow ties will enjoy their us
ual warm weather revival. The

This year, since they fit in
with the fashion trend by mak
ing possible a dressier, finer
looking as well as more comfort
able shoe, they are expected to
be a practically unanimous
choice in all types of men's shoes.
The gleam in the season's
shoes will mean an emphasis on
high-polished smooth leathers
with a natural gloss accentuated
by hand-rubbing. It doesn't
mean, however, that textured
leathers, which have won a de
served popularity, will now take
a back seat. They'll be seen more
than ever, both alone and in com
bination with smooth leathers,
but they'll be soft-grained and
will have a bright finish.
Tropical suedes, too, will con
tinue in prominence. The suede
and smooth leather combination
for town may be rich and glossy
or dull-finished for contrast.
All-suede casual and dress
casual shoes, on the contrary,
will be rough-textured with a
long plushy nap.
In shoes for town, leading col
ors will be black, medium tan,
teak brown, London tan, cardeu
and dark maple. The mid-low
oxford of three-to-four eyelet
height with a medium-broad toe
will prevail.
Purples Bloom in
Profusion in '57
From vivid peony pinks to
delicate lilacs, spring fashion is
a garden of color. Purples are
blooming in profusion not only
lilac, but violet, iris, lavender,
wisteria, mauve. New-leaf
greens, geranium, larkspur, tiger
lily, blues and pinks with a
mauw cast all aHH in fachinn'c
flower-like look.
There are fruits in the fash
ion garden, too luscious shades
of melon, orange, peach, pear,
lemon, apricot and lime ready
for the picking. And, as in every
garden, there are the hardy per
ennials navy and black, both
important this spring, both
branching out in an important
variety of ways.
Lighter-than-traditional navies
are news, and so is navy that has
a rich, almost royal-blue cast.
Black, liked alone or touched
with white, looks especially
fresh in black-and-white patterns
that give a gray effect.
Gray blossoms as the newest
of neutrals, in pale, pearly
shades that are a delight to the
eye.
There's a good crop of off
white to brown tones.
Among the vivid colors, red
reaps a lot of interest.
Prints continue the garden
tneme.
Wandering Waistline
Hailed by New Fashion
Again fashion hails the wan
dering waistline, and punctuates
it smartest designs above the na
tural line, and slightly below
that of '56 Empire themes.
Cummerbunds, tabs semi-belts
and designers' details all help
point up the short-waist line.

Patterned Shirts
To Get Big Push
Patterned shirts will enjoy a
big push this Spring, according
to the American Institute of
Men's and Boy's Wear.
Included in this group that
will help men to be dressed up
and dressed right will be some
stripes many with a bold, bold
look and checks and neat print
ed patterns such as pin dots.
Interest in the more elegant
shirts will be confined chiefly
to evening wear, not so much in
the pleated bosoms as in the
ruffled variety. '
Although white will keep its
high standing, the heavy promo
tion of patterned shirts should
give a lift to solid colors, pri
marily light blue.
There will be few new collars
styles but there should be
enough variety to satisfy any
man or woman shopper in the
short point spreads, 'button
downs, round pin types and sev
eral Continental ideas. A new
collar idea is one with built-in
stays.
Short-sleeved business shirts
will account for neater and more
comfortable men around confer
ence tables during the warm
weather months.
Teenage Feet Going
Elegant This Spring
Teenage feet are going elegant
for spring.
Flats and casuals, long fav
ored as teen footwear, are newly
shapely, and elegantly trimmed
with all the finesse of an eve
ning slipper.
Chief colors are the beige to
brown range, with brilliant or
ange and green shades as well
as black and white, alone or
combined.
Softer leathers are featured,
and leather linings are a part of
the color effect. Often, the lin
ings are brighter than the shoes.
Leathers range from punched
pigskin, pebbly grained leather
and suede for sportier types to
glove-tanned leather, polished
and slashed calf and patent
both smooth and newly textured.
Shiny black patent with white
broadtail-grained leather looks
particularly effective.
Toe shapes range from the
slightly rounded to the longer
"sharpened", toe to the squared
off one. There are flared demi
tongues, fringed kiltie tongues
and finger-gored ones. Many
flats have huge pilgrim buckles.
Wedges, too, have gone dressy,
appearing in printed leather and
white smooth or crushed leather
with gold trim.
Sportswear
Sportswear never looked pret
tier or more feminine than it
does this spring. "Borrowed from
the boys" styling and the "rough
and ready" look have been re
placed with newly lady-like fash
ions that feature softer silhou
ettes, luxurious "'fabrics and a
lovely color palette.
Slim lines are still the most
favored, but with a new look of
roundness and ease. Casual
dresses are no longer starkly
tailored. They have a gentle look
achieved through front or
back fullness, draped necklines,
more pleats, sashes and bows,
peg top effects and tapered lines.
The big popularity of silk has
done much to soften sportswear.
Linens look fresh and pretty in
such new patterned effects as

lacy tapestry types, lattice de
signs and damask looks.
Cottons have a gentle silky
look, and a lightweight cavalry
twill cotton is newsworthy for
separates. Those old favorites,
white duck and sharkskin, are
also making a big comeback.
Pale colors are the favorites,
especially deepened pastel flow
er tones. Pink with a new mauve
cast, grayish greens and blues,
dull gold, vanilla and faint gray
Dubonnet and wine colors look
new and attractive with white,
and white alone is favored for
separates of doeskin, sharkskin
and flannel. Hot tropical shades
of yellow, orange, coral and apri
cot round out the color picture.
Off-beat prints add interest to
separates of every variety, even
