Strom, heavier by 5192,000, re
tired Tuesday night at the age
of 10, the richest quiz winner
to TV history.
Young Rob, a fifth grade sci
ence expert from the Bronx,
N.Y., bowed out of the 'The
$64,000 Question" after 11 ap
pearances on the CBS-TV give
away. His parents, Albert and
Beatrice Strom, made the deci
sion even though Rob was of
fered, the chance of adding a
final $64,000 to his stake.
"Rob has had a wonderful ex
perience on the show," said Al
bert Strom, who earns S8.000 a
year as a vocational high school
teacher. "We've looked for signs
of strain, but we've seen none.
He's taking it in stride.
"But it's been a big strain on
my wife and myself. If he stayed
on, there would always be the
possibility of his missing with
all the heartbreak and feeling
that would go with it. We've de
cided this would be a good time
stop."
Young Strom, a 51-inch, 65
pound mental giant, will be paid
his pile in three yearly install
ments by the sponsor of the
show. That means he'll be able
to keep some $83,000 after
taxes.
Asked for his reaction to his
parents' decision, Rob said:
"Well . . . what can you do with
parents?"

Schools Get Approval
Salem (U.R) A bill to grant
state textbooks to parochial
schools in Oregon even if the
church schools fail to meet state
standards of classroom loads has
been approved by the House Ed
ucation committee.
The measures already had
been approved by the Senate
but was amended by the House
committee. It now requires
church schools to meet all stan
dards except classroom size, tea
cher load, and playground facil
ities before the state vill give
them textbooks. The changes
yere suggested by Leo Smith,
attorney for the Catholic arch
dioceses of Portland.
Oregonians Declared
Reluctant To Marry
Portland (U.R) The State
Board of Health said today Ore
gon men apparently aren't in
the marrying mood.
Or maybe it's the women.
Anyway, the state's 1956 mar
riage total ranked 47th lowest
among the 49 reporting United
States areas.
The state had 6.1 marriages
per 1,000 population during
1956, a total of 10,568.
