The President and his disarm
ament representative at the five
power talks in London talked
for 75 minutes yesterday. They
explored the progress made to
date toward some type of work
ing agreement with Russia on a
dependable start in the reduc
tion of concentional or non-nuclear
arms and the inauguration
of an international inspection
system. -

standing authorities in those fields to
write a simplified account of the
causes, symptoms, treatment, preven
tion and possibility of conquering the
"killers."

DISEASES OF THE
ARTERIES OF THE BRAIN
There are no accurate and re
liable figures on the number of
deaths caused by diseases of ar
teries of the brain each year in
the United States. A fair esti-
mate.however, would seem to be
about 100,000. In addition, there
art an estimated 1,500,000 per
sons in the United States who
are victims of such diseases,
which cause tremendous disa
bility, economic loss and sorrow.

Mayflower II Sails

Favorable Atlantic winds hit the
sails of the Mayflower II for
the first time Tuesday. Reports
reaching here said the replica
of the Pilgrims' ship was "really
moving" at last on its voyage to
the United States.
In the 60 hours since it cast
off from Plymouth en route to
Massachusetts, the Mayflower
had been unable to move faster
than three knots. But the wind
now has veered to north north
east and increased to force three
a figure estimated at 12 to 14
knots.
Albany Gas Plant
Explosion Rocks City
Albany, Ore. (U.R) An ex
plosion at the Albany gas com
pany destroyed the headquarters
and display room shortly after
the 5:30 pan. closing time Mon
day. . ;
The explosion occurred at ap
proximately 5:37 p.m. just min
utes after the 10 to 12 employees
had quit for the day. No one was
injured in the explosion.
The force of the explosion was
felt all over Albany and the Pa
cific highway that runs in front
of the building was covered with
plate glass.
1 The chief diseases which may
impair circulation to the brain
are high-blood pressure and
hardening of the arteries. These
diseases cause a wide variety
of symptoms. The most common
is "stroke" or "apoplexy," char
acterized by paralysis of vari
able degrees of the arm and leg
on one side of the body, freq
uently associated with inability
of the victim to speak normally.
The degree of paralysis varies
greatly; it may last a few min
utes or it may be more or less
permanent. Another symptom is
loss of vision, but this loss ordi
narily is transient. Some people
experience loss of consciousness
and other give evidence of pro
gressive deterioration of mental
faculties.
The most common diseases of
arteries of the brain can be pre
sented adequately only when
the precise causes of high-blood
pressure and hardening of the
arteries have been determined
accurately and when adequate
prevention can be carried out.

servation emphasizes the great
need for intensive research,
much of which is currently sup
ported by the American Heart
Association to the amount of
several millions of dollars. More
money and more trained per
sonnel are needed for more in
tensive investigation.
Although the cause of high
blood pressure in most cases is
not known, medical and surgical
control of high-blood pressure
proves to be satisfactory in most
instances when it is carried out
by a skilled physician or surgeon
and a cooperative patient.
Accumulating Evidence
The problem of treatment of
hardening of the arteries is in a
much less satisfactory state, but
medical science is accumulating
evidence which gives genuine
progress in the attack on this
Lparticular disease also. There.
is considerable evidence, for in
stance, that hardening of the
arteries is not an inevitable re
sult of accompaniment of the
process of growing older.
Because many of the complica
tions of hardening of the arteries
in the brain result from the for
mation of a blood clot on the dis
eased lining of the arteries, the
use of drugs which lessen' the
tendency of blood to clot fre
quently is very helpful. .
Much has been written about
the alleged direct' relationship
of the content of fat in the diet
to hardening of the arteries, but
the evidence to support such a
relationship is far from con
vincing, at least thus far. Cer
tainly, there is at present no

icans should lessen the amount
of fat they eat.
Rehabilitation Program
When a patient has had "apo
plexy," an active program of
rehabilitation ordinarily can do
much to improve usefulness of
the arms and legs and the ability
to speak.
No one can predict whether
or not all the problems relating
to high-blood pressure and hard
ening of the arteries can be
solved, but the results of re
search now give us reason for
optimism. Let us never forget,
however, that if research is in
adequate, there cannot be satis
factory progress.

For Labor Conference
Augusta, Ga. (U.R) President-Eisenhower
has summoned
Secretary of Labor James P.
Mitchell to a conference here
Thursday on legislation the ad
ministration may recommend to
protect union funds from rack
eteering. James C. Hagerty, Eisenhow
er's press secretary, said the
President and the cabinet mem
ber would consider legislation
for recommendation to this ses
sion of Congress.
Hagerty did not know wheth
er this would involve a special
presidential message to the
House and Senate.
Water Department
Starts Work on
Southeast Main
Medford water department
crews started work Monday on
installation of 7,500 feet of 24
inch water main in southeast
Medford, according to Robert
Lee, water superintendent.
The water main, estimated to
cost about $112,000, will be
located on Modoc ave., East Main
st., White Oak drive, Acron Way
and Black Oak drive between
Capitol ave. and Barneburg hill,
Lee said.
The water main is part of a
project which will be completed
in the next two years. About
three-fourths of the project will
be constructed w i t h in two
months, he said. '
The new water main will pro-
i vide water service for approxi1-
mately 1,000 acres near the new
Rogue Valley hospital and Barn
eburg hill area, and to serve as
a feeder main for a future res
ervoir on Barneburg hill, Lee
said.
The new water main also will
reinforce the south side feeder
main system and will provide ad
ditional capacity to the south
west portion of the city, accord
ing to Lee. About 400 more cust
omers in southwest Medford will
be served, he added.
When completed the water
main also will serve the Country
Club Manor, area, near Rogue
Valley Country club, and the
Rogue Valley Manor retirement
home planned for construction
on Barneburg hill, Lee said.

Traffic Counters Placed in Medford
Traffic counters have been
placed on west side Medford
streets for the past three weeks
as part of state highway depart
ment traffic volume survey, ac
cording to John H. Barlow, traf
fic survey supervisor, state traf
fic engineering departm ent,
Salem.
- Barlow said the traffic survey
was in connection , with a ' pro
ject to determine the orgin of
traffic volume increases and
shifts in city population. For the
next three weeks the survey will
be taken on east Medford streets,
completing the survey he said.
The traffic official added that
similar surveys were being taken
in most Oregon cities. When tha
survey is completed, he said, the
state highway department will
compile traffic volume figures
and distribute findings to cities
involved.
Barlow said the same survey is
taken every four years when
new figures are compared with
previous " traffic counts. During
the four-year period other traffic
surveys will be taken on county
roads and state highways, he
said.
