The Medical Roundup
When a Baby Has Colic
According to a recent article
by Dr. Lawrence Breslow, of the
University of Illinois, colic in
infants is com
monly due to
a poor feeding
technic, or to
under feeding,
or to allergy
to milk, or to
an intolerance
to starches or
butterfat. The
mother can
often find out
what is wrong by changing from
one type of food to another, and
keeping a record to see -what
helped and what didn't. The
most common cause for colic
among breast-fed babies is hun
ger. They are not getting enough
food. Often, on shifting the child
to a formula, he or she is com
fortable. If the child is on a formula,
the cutting-down on carbohy
drates (starch or sugar) may
promptly clear up the difficulty.
If, when sugar is added, ,the
child promptly becomes uncom
fortable the mother will be fair-
Warning Sounded
Against Unchecked
Use of X-Rays
Washington (U.R), New. warn
ings have been sounded against
unchecked use of X-r ays for
treatment and diagnosis.
They were voiced by Dr. H.
Bentley Glass, a geneticist, who
said peacetime uses of radia
tion may be doing more here
ditary harm to man than has,
been supposed.
Not Significant
At the same time Glass said
f adioactive fallout from nuclear
weapons tests is "not significant"
from the standpoint of genetic
damage to mankind.
Glass, of Johns Hopkins
University, told the National
Academy of Sciences that new
estimates indicate human beings
are getting more X-radiation
than was believed as recently as
last June.
He also said currently recom
mended safe radiation limits
may have to be sharply reduced
if some new speculations on gen
etic damage rates are borne out
by investigation.
Science has established that
radiation whether from cosmic
rays, radioactive minerals, atom
ic bombs or X-rays damages
the hereditary material of germ
cells or genes and that the dam
age is passed on from generation
to generation.
Depends on Amount ,
The ampunt of genetic damage
depends on the amount of radia
tion accumulated over the years.
The resulting handicaps bred in
to the race may be so slight as
to be imperceptible or so severe
as to cripple or kill.
The race was adjusted to, or at
least "learned to live w i t h,"
background radiation. Bad genes
tend to "breed out," good ones
to survive. What worries the
geneticists is the radiation man
has added to his normal burden.

DARN ItI
North Hollywood (U.R)
Mrs. Betty Bannon said today
the man who held her up at
night outside her home should
eat more carrots to help him see
better in the dark. Mrs. Bannon
said the thief snatched her knit

purse containing more than $60.

ly certain what the difficulty is.
Sometimes when butterfat is at
fault, the use of "hatf-skirnmed"
powder or a "diluted evaporated
milk" formula with added car
bohydrate and protein is used.
Sometimes it is hard to say
what is wrong when several fac
tors in the diet are at fault.
By changing to goat's milk or
soy bean milk the mother can
find out if the child's colic is
due to the very common allergy
to cow's milk. Children who
have eczema often are allergic
to milk. In some cases colic is
due to the addition of orange
juice to the diet.
The infant should be examined
by a physician to make sure that
he hasn't an infected middle ear
or some other disease. Ofter the
baby is more comfortable when
he is burped or given a small
enema.
Keloids
In somee people when a cut is
made in the skin, it heals with
a raised, red, ugly-looking scar.
It is seldom of any. use to cut
this scar out because a new ke
loid is pretty sure to form. Skin
specialists tell me th( if a ke
loid is under. three months of
age, x-rays or radium will some
times help.' Several' treatments
with dry ice are' said sometimes
to help. Some men tried inject
ing a dissolving ferment hyalu
ronidase, into the keloids, but,
I do not know how- well it has
worked.
Dr. Alzarez hopes his readers
will understand that it would be
impossible for him to answer
requests for information or to
tempt to diagnose by mail.
