Legislation Topic
Of Camping Groups
Al YMCA Meeting
Recent legislation governing
employees o camps -was dis
cussed at a meeting of the South
ern Oregon section of the Ameri
can Camping association at the
Medford YMCA yesterday.
Delegates representing YMCA
camps of Medford and Klamath
Falls, Boy Scout from two coun
cils. Camp Fire Girls, 4-H club
camp and the Salvation Army
camp attended the meeting.
Also discussed were opportu
nities for government assistance
on certain surplus food, insur
ance for campers, standards for
evaluating camps, and educa
tion of the public on values of
organized camping.
Tour Conducted
Girl Scout representatives,
Mrs. P. Ritchey and Neva Hayes,
conducted the group through the
Day Camp site.
Naomi French, Klamath Falls,
chairman for the meeting, Glen
Klein, was host, and Bob Jones,
Medford YMCA executive secre
tary, arranged the program.
Officers continuing in posts
are Naomi French, Klamath
Falls, chairman; Jones, chair
man elect; Klein, first member
ship chairman; James Harpole,
Klamath falls, second vice
chairman; and Mrs. Gladys
Amundson, Roseburg, secretary-
treasurer.
The next meeting will be held
in Klamath Falls Wednesday,
May 15, at the YMCA there.
United Airlines to
Distribute Magazine
The first general interest maga
zine ever published by a U.S.
airline for its passengers to read
in flight will be distributed
aboard United Air Lines flights
beginning May 1.
Entitled "Mainliner," the 16
page magazine will be published
monthly in full color. Included
will be articles of general inter
est as well as factual stories
about airline travel. '"Mainliner"
will be distributed in seat pock
ets of all United flights.

BARD'S BIRTHDAY Gov. Robert D. Holmes, right, today, re
ceived a colorful invitation to the Oregon Shakespearean Festi
val's opening night in Ashland, Aug. 1. The presentation, occas
ioned by Shakespeare's 393rd birthday on April 23,- was made by
Mrs. John C. Cotton, left, president of the festival board, and Mi
chael Cotton, center, a page in the acting company. Gov. and
Mrs. Holmes have already secured reservations for the first four
performances in August. They are "As You Like It," "Two Gen
tlemen from Verona," "Henry VIII" and "Othello."
Car Smacks Truck;
Iwo Teen-Agers Die
Eugene U.R) A car carrying
four teen-agers crashed into a
log truck 45 miles east of here
date Monday. Two of the
youths were, dead and two oth
ers were in serious condition.
Richard L. Hornbeck, 17, Mc
Kenzie Bridge, was dead on ar
rival at a hospital. An autopsy
was scheduled. Linda Gale Mc
Mullen, 15, Vida, died early to
day in Sacred Heart hospital
here.
Linda Bunell, 14, Leaburg,
suffered two broken legs and
possible internal injuries and
Tim Graves. 17, Leaburg, suf
fered a broken leg and a pos
sible skull fracture.
Police said the accident oc
curred just west of McKenzie
high school. The car carrying
the youths collided with a log
truck driven by Mitchell C.
Carlton of Blue River, who was
not hurt.
Oregon Student Wins FFA Speech Contest

17-year-old high school senior
from Canby, Ore., won first
place Monday night in the west
ern regional Future Farmers of
America public speaking contest
here.
Adin Alfred Hester, who
spoke on "atoms for agricul
ture," will represent the 11
Western States at the national
convention of the FFA Oct. 14
in Kansas City, Mo.
Joseph Lee France, Porter-
ville, Calif., was runner-up. He
spoke on "farming for fortune
or failure."
Third place winner was Ron
ald Inouye, American Fork,
Utah, who spoke on "t h e
(strength of our nation."
Youngsters from Arizona, Cal
ifornia, Colorado, Idaho, Mon
tana, Nevada, New Mexico, Ore
gon, Utah, Washington and Wy
oming competed.

miners at the Greenside Colliery
were brewing tea far under
ground. The tiny burner they
were using tipped over and start
ed a fire. Monday, miners mak
ing a periodic check of the area,
reported the fire finally had
burned out.
