One in four persons in this coun
try snore. Not as many women
snore as men. However, the
women snore louder. Snores are
measured by that unit of sound
called the decibeL There are 40
decibel snorers and 90-decibel
snorers. The former are some
what gentle snorers. Their room
mates can get used to them. The
90-decibel snorers are really ma
jor menaces to slumber. They
should have separate rooms. And
the rooms should have sound
proof walls.
Show Business
New York stage attractions
are announced a month in ad
vance. Mail orders are invited.
A theatrical enthusiast informs
me she regularly sends mail or
ders for coming attractions a
month in advance but does not
get an answer until two or three
days after the show was opened.
If the reviews have been espe
cially good indicating the show
is a hit, she gets a letter saying
there are no seats for the date
she named. If the reviews are
bad, indicating an early closing
of the show, she gets the tickets.
This indicates that in some cases
there may be unholy alliances
between theatrical producers
and ticket spectators. It is a
form of rackteerlng that should
have the attention of the Better
Business Bureau or some similar
oraganization. It appears to also
come under the jurisdiction of
those who are required to en
force the laws concerning ticket
speculators.

career as a player his salary was

ager from 1920 to 1926 he re
ceived $40,000 year. In 1928,
his last year in the game, he re
ceived for playing only, a salary
of $70,000 from Connie Mack's
Athletics. Cobb acquired . his
huge fortune from investments
made on the advice of smart and
influential admirers of his base
ball prowess.

Two Are Sentenced
In Circuit Court
Barry Eugene Baer, 21, Cen
tral Point, was given a one-year
suspended sentence in circuit
court Wednesday by Judge H.
K. Hanna.
Baer, who previously pleaded
guilty to charges of failing to
stop at the scene of an accident
involving bodily injury, was ar
rested last month by Central
Point police after the car he
was driving reportedly failed to
stop at a red .light and struck a
car driven by Mrs. Ethel Mae
Bennett, Selma.
He was ordered by the court
to make restitution for medical
expenses and damage done to
the Bennet automobile, and
pleasure driving privileges were
revoked for a year.
Also sentenced in circuit
court was Melvin Loren Haakin
son, 24, Shady Cove. He was
sentenced to two years in the
Oregon state penitentiary after
pleading guilty to charges of
grand larceny.
Haakinson was arrested in
March by sheriff's deputies in
connection with the theft of
2,355 pounds of steel magne
sium from the G and C Mining
iand Milling company of Eagle
Point.
John D. Abel of Canyonville
appeared in circuit court
Wednesday on charges of obtain"
ing money by false pretenses.
Sentencing was postponed by
Judge Hanna when Abel re
quested representation by coun
sel. Allen Holmes was appoint
ed by te court.
One car is stolen in the United
States every two minutes.
Variety Show Promoter
Held on Check Charge
Pocatello, Ida. U.R) Sheriff
Charles Strawn, Coquille, Ore.,
Tuesday returned a variety
show promoter to Oregon to
face a charge of issuing no-
account checks.
The promoter, D. H. Luce, 27,
Ellensburg, Wash., was arrested
by Pocatello police last week on
the basis of the Oregon warrant.
Luce was in Pocatello to ar
range a benefit show for the lo
cal Moose lodge.
Officers said the man also
was wanted on similar charges
in Garden City, Ida., and
Clarkston, Wash.

be indebted to them.

I are very unhappy about pur
22-year-old daughter, who is
married and lives quite far from
us.
Pauline married against our
wishes two years ago and we
have seen her only twice since
then. When she and Anthony
came and told us they were
married, we simply gave them
our blessing and a good sized
check to get them started in
their married life. They said
they would take it as a loan,
but not as a gift.
Since then, we have sent them
other gifts of money, clothing
and household necessities, but
they returned everything. We
have never gone to see them be
cause they have not invited us,
but a relative, who was passing
through their community, stop
ped to see them and told us that
their living conditions were
frightful. Pauline and her hus
band are musicians and do not
work steadily.
Pauline is our only child and
we want her to be happy and
comfortable. We can well afford
to help her. Why is she so stub
born? e
Pauline M. All my life my
parents have been telling me
how much they ,did for me and
how little they had when they
were my age. They poisoned
every drop of food by telling
me that I didn't appreciate all
I had. My mother worked in my
father's business, although she
didn't want to. She kept telling
me she was doing it all for me
and someday I would realize her
sacrifice.
I knew they wouldn't like
Anthony even before I brought
him home, but I didn't expect
them to come down on me the
way they did. They said he had
no "background," didn't know
how to act or dress and would
never make a living. It happens
that his parents are poor and
immigrants, but they are the
most wonderful people I've ever
known. It is hard for them to
give us the gifts they've given,
but we've kept them because we
know they are sent with love.
My family has a distorted
sense of values. Our living con
ditions are poor, but not "fright
ful" and we don't want to be
indebted to my folks.
The Council: It took many
years to create all the bitterness
Pauline feels toward her parents
and the damage cannot be un
done in a day. If Pauline has
given a truthful picture of her
early life, her parents made a
serious error, but she should
realize it was simply an error.
They wanted her to under
stand that she had unusual ad
vantages and they wanted her
to be aware of whai they knew
so well that such advantages

Ellsworth Nomination
Confirmed by Senate
Washington (U.R) The Sen
ate has confirmed the nomina
tion of former Congressman Har
ris Ellsworth to be a member of
the Federal Civil Service Com
mission. The long-time Roseburg Re
publican is expected to be sworn
in to his new post tomorrow and
then appointed chairman of the
commission.

Pauline should also realize
that she may be exaggerating
and distorting her parents' atti
tudes because of an obscure psy
chological resentment against
them. This deeply rooted resent
ment against parents is not un
common. Many individuals seize
on trifling factors to give some
basis in reality for the feeling.
If Pauline tries to look back
over her life objectively, she
will undoubtedly find many ex
amples of her parents' love,
goodness and understanding.
In any case, Pauline should
grow up enough to understand
that her parents send their gifts
with as much love as Anthony's
parents. The fact that they are
economically more able to give
doesn't lessen the love one bit.
Pauline's conduct toward them
is cruel and childish. When she
feels differently toward them,
she will know she is beginning
to grow up.

21 Prizes Slated
For Hunt Winners
A total of 21 prizes will be
offered Saturday in the Med
ford Kiwanis club's annual
Easter egg hunt for youngsters
of the vicinity.
The scamper for eggs will
start at 9 a.m- at Hawthorne
park.
Children will hunt in three
sections of the park in -age
groups 1 to 3, 4 to 6, and 7 to 9.
Seven eggs in each of the sec
tions will be marked entitling
the finders to prizes. There will
be a grand prize egg in each sec
tion. All children of the area are
invited to participate.
AFL-CIO Orders Beck
Trial To Proceed
Washington flJ.P The AFL
CIO has brushed aside objec
tions by the Teamsters Union
and ordered that the trial of
President Dave Beck and the
union itself on corruption
charges proceed as scheduled. ,
AFL-CIO President George
Meany flatly rejected "negotia
tion or bargaining" with the
teamsters over trial procedures
to be adopted at the hearings.
The teamsers Executive Board,
at a meeting in Galveston, Tex.,
Tuesday, offered to set up a five
member group to negotiate on
procedures with the parent la
bor organization.
