On Proposed Budget
For Ashland Schools
Ashland The Ashland school
board citizen's committee ear
lier this week approved a pro
posed 1957-58 school budget call
ing for an expenditure of about
$100,000 more than the budget
for the current year.
The proposed budget totals
$913,801 for 1957-58, compared
to an overall budget approved
last year of 5814,050.
Reason for the higher budget
proposal is due to increase teach
ers' salaries and planned ad
ministration building projects
and site acquisitions, according
to Dr. Howard Balderstone, su
perintendent of Ashland schools.
Election Scheduled
Ashland voters will consider
the proposed budget at an elec
tion May 20.
Including essential expenses
but excluding interest and prin
cipal on bonds, the budget seeks
revenue to cover $816,801 in ex
penses, Balderstone said.
This compares with $710,624
in the 1956-57 fiscal year.
Adding the bond interest and
principal, comparable figures are
5814,050 in 1956-57 and $913,
801 in 1957-58, the superinten
dent said.
Increase Personnel
Balderstone said $62,661 of
the increased figure is reflected
in the increased cost of per
sonnel, including the addition of
six full-time teachers and pay
allocation for one half-time posi
tion. An additional $30,000 was
asked in the budget for construc
tion of administrative building
facilities near the high school,
and another $10,000 for acquisi
tion of building sites in that
area.
Balderstone said that current
offices on Main st. are unsatis
factory because of their remote
ness from school facilities and
because of the heavy incidence j
of street travel.
Legislative Briefs
Salem (U.R) The Senate has
voted to remove House bill 650,
providing for suspension of pub
lic officials under indictment,
from the Multnomah county del
egation where it had been tabled.
The vote was strictly along
party lines, with the 15 Repub
licans voting to take the bill
from the delegation and the 14
preseit Democrats voting against
it. Sen. Andrew J. Naterlin,
Newport Democrat, had been ex
cused to attend a funeral.
Sen. G. D. Gleason, Portland
Democrat, charged the Repub
licans with a breach of faith.
He said there had been an under
standing by both parties that
such a controversial issue would
not be brought up when a mem
ber of either party was excused
Had Sen. Naterlin, been present,
and had he voted with his Dem
ocratic colleagues, the' vote
would have been 15-15 and the
bill would have remained on the
table of the Multnomah county
delegation.
Salem (U.R) The House pas
sed two of three bills increasing
rates and benefits under the
workmen's compensation law a
total of 19.9 per cent.
Vote on the chief bill was
41-18, over objections that the
rate increase was too steep. A
move by Republican Rep. Win
ton J. Hunt, Woodburn, to re
refer the bills to the Committee
on Labor and Industries for
further study failed.
Salem (U.R) The joint Ways
and Means Committee approved
unanimously a budget calling for
$44,200,000 for higher education.
The budget calls for faculty
salary hikes and increased stu
dent fees. State students will pay
an additional $6 per quarter or
518 for a full school year. Out-
of-state students will pay $11 ;
more per quarter, or $33 per
school year.

Apply for Institute
Application forms of the sec
ond annual Oregon State college
junior engineers' and scientists'
summer institute are now avail
able at Medford High school for
10th and 11th grade students, ac
cording to school officials.
Sophomores and juniors from
Oregon and southwest Washing
ton high schools areeligible to
apply for admission to the insti
tute. The two-week session will
be held June 9-22.
Seven science students at Med
ford High school have applied
for enrollment in the summer
institute and -will receive noti
fication of acceptance early in
May if their applications are
approved, school officials said.
Total per capita cost for the
science - engineering orientation
course is 590. The fee includes
board, lodging,, tuition, field
trips, supplies and other costs.
Financial assistance is available
to students who qualify.
Scientists of Tomorrow, a non
profit organization, is sponsor
ing the two-week summer institute.
