Tokyo (U.R) What does
Easter mean to you? New
clothes, Easter eggs, bunnies,
spring flowers? These are part
of our traditions, and there is
no need to abandon them. But
much deeper than these lies a
great fact. Easter can mean new
life and joy and peace, triumph
over pain and even over death.
Easter always follows Good
Friday. But let us not forget
that the first Good Friday, when
Jesus hung with thieves on Cal
vary and was crucified for sins
he did not commit, did not seem
very good! His closest followers,
with the exception of John the
beloved disciple, were conspicu
ous by their absence as far as
we can learn from the record
His mother Mary and some of the
women were there weeping, as
well they might at an event so
terrible and so undeserved. Most
of the disciples, apparently afraid
of being implicated, disappeared,
while Judas who had betrayed
him was so horrified at what he
had done that he went out and
hanged himself. The whole situ
ation was very dark indeed.

Catholics, thousands of tourists
and pilgrims jammed all avail
able hotel space. Pope Pius, who
granted an audience to 30,000
pilgrims Wednesday, planned to
spend Maundy Thursday in pray
er and meditation.
In London, Queen Elizabeth
followed ancient tradition today
in distributing token "Maundy
money" to the aged poor of her
kingdom. But she broke a 300-
year-old custom by taking the
ceremony out of London, to St.
Albans Abbey.
Processions were being staged
throughout Spain today. The
marching crowds chanted pray
ers and carried religious statues.

mourning from midday until

The phenomenon consisted of
a big perfect circle of blue sky
in a blanket of fluffy white
clouds. The effect was .visible to
the naked eye and showed clear
ly on photographic plates.
Pictures were widely pub
lished and inquiries have poured
in from across the nation, Or

Mother, Children
Stabbed Before Blast

Autopsies showed today that a
mother and her two children
had been stabbed before a mys
terious "upstairs'-' explosion re
duced their two-story frame
home to rubble and critically
injured the father.
The father, Woodrow Mat
thews, 42, who suffered severe
burns in the early-morning
blast Wednesday, also had stab
wounds which police said may
have been self-inflicted.
District Attorney Louis M.
Greenblott expressed the belief
that the explosion was set off
intentionally, but he deferred
questioning of Matthews be
cause of the seriousness of his
condition.
The dead were identified as
Matthews' wife, Ella, 40; their
son, Carl, 10, and their daugh
ter, Alma, 14.
"It's all very puzzling," said
Coroner Vincent Maddi.

The light of glad expectancy and
renewed hope in her eyes as she
turns from the empty tomb to
confront the living Christ. In one
word, "rabboni!" are compressed
her gratitude, her enduring de
votion, her joy. For her, triumph
was shining through grief and
hope had again been born in her.
Easter Repeats Itself
Now the great thing about
Easter is that it did not happen
just once, long ago and far
away. Of course, it did happen
once, the climax of the supreme
event of all history, which is
God's revelation of himself in the
life and death of his son Jesus
Christ.
Yet because it happened once,
it keeps on happening in the lives
of persons just like ourselves.
Because Jesus Christ is not simp
ly a memory, or a person to read
about in the history of Palestine,
but a living presence, our lives
can have the same hope and joy
th-t came to Mary Magdalene.
The last words of the gospel
according to St. Matthew are
those in which Jesus says, "Lo, I
am with you always, to the close
of the age." Had not the resur
rection occurred, this promise
could not be ours. But it is ours.
Presence of Christ
Have we sin, either a gnawing
consciousness of guilt or a dull
indifference to what is right?
Jesus Christ is with us' to forgive
the penitent and give us new
life.
Have we pain, physical or
mental, for ourselves or for those
we love? Christ's living presence
will see us through.
Do we face death, soon or in
the dim and unknown future?
Indeed, we all must, but it need
have no terrors, for He has risen
and has promised eternal life.
Does the world look dark? No
darkness can blot out the light j
that shines from Him. The story
of His coming opens with the
shining of a star; it ends with
"Peace be with you, and the
asurance of His presence with us
forever.
In Kim was life, and the life
was the light of men. The light
shines in the darkness, and the
darkness has not overcome it."
So this is the message of East
er, not the interesting but incon
sequential things we often asso
ciate with it, but life, life abund
ant, life eternal. This is God's
Easter gift to us, the greatest
gift His love could offer us, the
greatest gift ever given to the
world.

sions for two Illinois Valley

committees of local organizations
discussed the July 4 celebration
and the annual Labor Day Ju
bilee. The three veteran's groups in
the valley are in charge of In
depedence Day activities, which
will include an open air dance
at the Veterans of Foreign Wars
grounds near Cave Junction,
booths and concessions, a parade
and a carnival. Under considera
tion is a queen contest, with a
"Spirit of Liberty" and her court
to be chosen by popular vote.
