New York Night Clubs Hit
By Entertainment Tax, TV;
Many Famous
New York OI.R) You ask
which night clubs to hit on your
trip to New York. It would be
easier to tell you the ones you
can t be hit by.
You can't go to the Diamond
Horseshoe, Martinique, La
Conga, Havana - Madrid, Ver
sailles, Eeachcomber, Leon and
Eddie's, Paradise and Casino In
ternational. Some of the hotel
dancing rooms have shut shop.
EI Morocco just got slapped
with a tax lien for almost $850,
000. Manager John Perona says
he won't close but what hap
pened to him is the kind of bad
news the clubs have been getting
in giant doses since the war.
Benito CoIIada. a Spanish
playwright's son who runs El
Chico in Greenwhich Village
says if it keeps on the way it's
going .there won't be any night
We in Isew York
"They're closing all over the
place," according to Ben, "and
there hasn't been a new fully-
equipped night club started in
this town in 10 years that I
know of. It's a myth that New
York is the night club center
The Tropicana in Havana would
hold all the patrons of every
New York club combined
"Here the Stork Club and
'21' don't have shows. So what
do you have left among the big
names? The Latin Quarter and
the Copacabana."
Ben and other owners put the
main blame on Uncle Sam for
their troubles the tax charged
anywhere there is singing or
dancing.
me entertainment tax is
murdering this business," he
says. "The federal government
add 20 per cent and the city
adds another five per cent to
every bill. The people squawk
about the tax, not the bill. The
government must put down the
tax at least to 10 per cent. The
government would gain more
income from the increased
trade."
Two Cars Needed
To Gef Man To Work
Knoxville, Tenn. (U.R) For
the past month It has taken two
cars to get W. Earl White to his
job and back each day ever
since the bridge collapsed on his
private road.
White, a printer for the
Knoxville Journal, did not know
it was his road until the county
refused to rebuild a bridge over
a creek when it collapsed.
Unable to afford a new bridge,
Vhite bought a second car so
he can keep one on each side
of the creek and ride to work
relay style. He wades across the
shallow creek to change "cars.

The tax hjfe hurt the clubs but
so have television and the chang
ed mood of America. People stay
home more and go to bed earlier.
If you're looking for a quiet
j place to chat in New York about
2 a.m., go to a night club. On
week days the tables are set
for solitarie.
"People come to New York,"
says Ben, "and sit in air con
ditioned hotels watching the
same TV shows they saw back
home. Or they get free untaxed
tickets to TV shows."
But Ben, who starts his 33rd
year at El Chico this month,
thinks there still are plenty of
red-blooded, green-lined Ameri
cans anxious to hit the clubs.
"How can a boy f irid out about
a girl unless he gets on a dance
floor and holds her in his arms?"
he asked. "Show her television,
huh?"
