Dog Law to Be Enforced

Jacksonville Police Chief
Frank Carter has reminded Jack
sonville residents that all dogs
within the city limits must be
tied or retained during gardening
season from April 1 until Aug. 1,
according to city ordinance.
For the first offense dog own
ers will be fined $5. The second
time a dog is caught loose he
will be picked up and taken to
the county dog pound and held
five days and then destroyed if
the owner does not agree to keep
the dog confined at home. Dogs
are also to be kept at home at
night, he said.
Carl A. Totman, Jacksonville
High school science teacher, has
received an appointment for a
Ford National Science Founda
tion Summer Institute grant at
Iowa State Teacher college. Un
der the program, Totman will
receive tuition plus expenses
while attending a special pro
gram aimed at dissemination of
the latest developments in biolo
gy and the encouragement of
more and better science students.
Totman has taught in the Jack
sonville Schools the past six
years. He has a bachelor's degree
from Iowa -State Teachers col
lege, and a master's degree from
Pacific university. His family
will accompany him east for the
summer months.
News has been received that
the home of Mrs. Emma Kassha
fer, a former Jacksonville resi
dent, now of the Sams Valley
area, was destroyed by fire
March 17. She is now living in a
cabin on the" property. Origin of
the fire is unknown.
Mrs. Rose Zimmerman and
daughter, Joyce Fields, of Jack
sonville, recently purchased the
Nuget confectionery from Mr.
and Mrs. William Kayser of Med
ford. Mrs. Zimmerman and her
daughter began operating the
Nuget April 1.
Mrs. Velma Moon and daugh
ter, Karen Frohs, recently re
turned from a trip to Sacramen
to, Calif. They visited another
daughter, Mrs. Tom Castro, and
family, the former Connie Frohs.
Mrs. Moon had her first visit
with her new three-month-old
granddaughter, Terri Lou Ann
Castro. While in Sacramento
they also visited friends former
ly of Portland, Mr. and Mrs.
Mack Bree.
Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Wil
kinson, proprietors of Mom's
Hide-Away, recently returned
from a 1,900 mile trip They vis
ited in Reno, Las Vegas, Nev.,
and in Paradise, Calif, visited
Mrs. Wilkinson's brother, Her
man Fenton.
Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Hill from
Brookdale rd, Medford, are new
residents in Jacksonville. They
recently purchased the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Johnson
at 520 East California st. The
Hills are former 'residents here
and lived on the old Lind Ranch
coming here in the fall of 1942.
Henry Johnson, who is a
school teacher at the Griffin
Creek school has moved his fam
ily to Medford.
Also recent "returnees" to
Jacksonville now living at the
Rancho Courts are Mr. and Mrs.
Bud Reinking and son, Eddie, of
Medford. Eddie is a student at
Oregon State college in Cor-vallis.
Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Serry
have left Jacksonville this week
to make their future home in
Rosemead, Calif. Their daughter

After much consideration and
clever campaigning stunts the
stud :nt body of Medford High
school came up with these re
sults from the final Associated
Student Body election: Dave
Frohnmayer, president; Mike
Russell, vice president; Sharon
Walsh, secretary; Frank Albert,
business manager; Tom Morris,
treasurer; Doug Randies, yell
king; and Carolyn Hillyer, yell
queen. These officers will as
sume the responsibilities of their
offices next fall.
Several of the races were very
close. Doug Randies edged out
Larry Berteau by a margin of
two votes, while Mike Russell
and Carolyn Hillyer won their
offices from John Jones and
Winifred Gott by the narrow
margins of 10 and 12 votes, respectively.
"Under the Big Top!" will be
theme for the annual Girls'
League week April 15-18.
Many unusual activities have
been planned, including a "hat
and shirt" day on Tuesday. This
will be the time when the girls
make unusual hats, and the boys
wear the loudest shirts they
have. The winners of the con
test will be announced during
the latter part of the hour-long
combined lunch per.od featuring
a sack lunch on the lawn.
A "slack day" is planned for
Wednesday, when all girls will
be permitted to wear slacks,
pedal pushers and similar out
fits. During the lunch period on
Wednesday, students will be vot
ing for next year's Girls' and
Boys' League officers.
This year something new is
planned for Thursday. As the
mother-daughter tea and style
show are also planned for that
day, it has been designated
"dress-up" day, with girls wear
ing high heels, nylons, and fancy
clothes to school.

for the tea; Kathy Ritchey, style

Wood and Meredith Huggins,
programs; Denise Bruning, pub
licity; and Sandra Buxton, clean
up.
Mrs. Elizabeth Settle. Crater
adviser, announced the 1957-58
yearbook staff Fridav. Sandra
Buxton and Walter Humphrey
will be co-editors; Steve Hoag,
assistant editor; Gladys Beddoe,
sales-manager: and other busi
ness staff members will be Eric
Eitreim and Loren Cantrall.

and family, Mr. and Mrs. R. S.
Keener, live near there.
Mrs Alice Doty is home from
a week's visit in San Francisco.
The Don Godley's are moving
into their new home on South
Oregon st.
The Jacksonville Ruth Re
bekah club held a recent meet
ing at the IOOF. hall in Jackson
ville. There were 18 members
present. Guests were Mrs. Sta
ley Murrey and two children of
Medford, and Mrs. Pearl Kitch
en's two granddaughters, Miss
Glenda and Ellen Tryon of
Grants Pass. Potluck refresh
ments were served. The next
meeting will be held the last
Tuesday in April at -the home
of Mrs. Louis Jones on Taylor
lane.
