    Order of Amaranth Holds
Eighth Annual Ceremony
Roxy Ann court, Order of the Emaranth, installed its eighth
eoyal matron at a service held in the Medford Masonic temple last
Saturday evening, April 6.
Guests and members were wel
comed and the court ceremonies
opened by Mrs. Ira Canfield, roy
al matron, and royal patron Clar
ence Harwood with the 1956 of
ficers. Introduced and escorted
to the throne were J. J. Kennedy
of Roxy Ann court and also
grand royal patron of the Ama
ranth in Oregon, and Mrs. Wil
lis Mack of Columbia court, As
toria, grand -associate matron,
actinz in the absence of the
grand royal matron, Mrs. Gid
eon Zimmerman . of Mizpah
coiyt, Portland.
The uncrowning ceremonies
followed with a past royal ma
tron, Mrs. Dewey Queen of Ox-
nard, Calif., formerly of Med
ford, serving as uricrowning ma
tron. She was assisted by Mrs.
William Barnes as crown bear
er, Mrs. Tom Freed, standard
bearer, Mrs. J. J. Kennedy and
Mrs. Carl Oestreich as marshals.

and an addendum and gifts
given them by the court and

Preceding the installation, a
sextette of McLaughlin Junior
High school girls, with Ray Lew
is as their director, gave sev
eral numbers.
The court room was decorated
in blue and white, the colors se
lected by the new matron for
her year. Throne decorations
were part of the decorations
used at the grand court session
in Portland, consisting of a large
gold pallet with blue forget-me-nots,
the flower chosen for the
1957 officers throughout the
state, and the word "Sincerity,"
the motto, which the grand roy
al matron' has chosen for the
year.
Thomas Turpin, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Vernon Turpin and Warren
Skoog, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ole
Skoog, lighted the candles. The
installing officers were Clarence
Harwood, installing patron; Mrs.
Glenn Linn, marshal and Jack
Kennedy, aide to marshal; Mrs.
John E. White, prelate; Mrs.
Dewey Queen, secretary and
Mrs. L. G. Frink, organist.
Installed were Mrs Vernon A.

Fred Graten sang "The Lord's

panied by Mrs. L. G. Frink. Mrs
Elton Waldron acted as corona
tion matron, assisted by Mr. Tur
pin as marshal; Mrs, Tom Freed,
standard bearer; Mrs. George
Rehart, crown bearer; Elton

Knights Assist

After short addresses by the
matron and patron, addenda
were given for them by their of
ficers and gifts presented.
In conclusion, officers and
members of Job's Daughters,
Bethel 55 took part in a cere
mony of presenting the cross
and John C. Smith pronounced
the benediction.
A reception and refreshments
followed. Pouring coffee were
past royal matrons of the court.

In preparation for the Oriental theme
dance which Rogue Valley Country club will
give April 27, Willie Koo Tu instructs the
feminine members of his committee how to
eat with chopsticks. The menu for the event,
which will be the annual spring formal
dance, will include both Oriental and Ameri
can foods. A cocktail hour is set for 7 p.m.
and the buffet style dinner will be served
later in the evening. Planning the dance
are (left to right) Mrs. George Lewis, Mrs.
Frank Hopewell, Dan Hull (alias Willie Koo
Tu). Mrs. Hull and Mrs. Sam Gilbert. The
Hopewells and the Hulls are co-chairmen in
charge of arrangements.

have been recognized for their
outstanding scholarship by be
ing listed on the winter term
scholastic honor roll at Oregon
State college.

honor rolL 71 students made
straight A grades. To be eligible
for honor roll listing, students
must maintain at least a 3.5
grade point average, with 4
points equaling straight A's.

In Rogite River
Rogue River Elisabeth Cel-
lier of France and Fen Haulani
of Bandjamasm, Indonesia, two
exchange students attending
Grants Pass High school, spoke
to Rogue River Lions auxiliary
last week At the meeting 54
Brownies and their mothers of
the Rogue River troop were
guests.
Customs, religions, and educa
tion, of France and Indonesia
were discussed and comparisqn
by the exchange students. ?.
The president reported on the
spring board meeting held in
Salem and also her visit to the
Oregon School for the Blind
where she talked with the two
children that had been "adopt
ed" by the auxiliary. She also
reported on the auxiliary's plan
to send several members to the
Summer Institute for the par
ents of the handicapped children.
They will' help with the baby
sitting while the parents attend
'the classes.
Auxiliary members voted to
send a Brownie girl from the
Fly-up group of Rogue River to
camp this summer for one week.
Handweavers' Guild
To Meet on Tuesday
' The April meeting of Rogue
Valley Handweavers guild will
be held at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Dwight Houghton, 512 Da
kota avenue, Medford, Tuesday,
April 16, at 8 p. m.
All weavers are invited to attend.
Installation Set
For Social Club
Reames Social club will in
stall the new 1957-58 officers at
the monthly luncheon meeting
at 12 o'clock on Wednesday,
April 17, at Masonic hall. The
new officers are Mrs. Lloyd Ca

Mrs. Roy V. Nordwick is the
retiring president.

At Hedrick School
Members of Medford Garden
club attended a tree planting
and dedication ceremony at Hed
rick Junior High school Wednes
day afternoon. The tree, a plane
tree also known as an American
sycamore, was donated by Mrs.
Alice Smith, member of the
club.
Mrs. L. R. Th6mas, president
of the club, introduced Mrs. J.
W. Ostrander, of the- conserva
tion committee, who gave the
dedication.
Receiving the tree on behalf
of the school were John Frohn
mayer and Nancy Becken, presi
dent of the Student Body.
Vincent Bevis, principal of
Hedrick school, also attended the
ceremony.

Sorority Council
Holds Meeting;
Annual Sale Held
"April Showers and Flowers"
was the theme used by Alpha
Lambda chapter Epsilon Sigma
Alpha sorority for a meeting of
the Southern Oregon District
council last Saturday. Members
from Alpha Iota and Gamma Rho
chapters of Grants Pass, and
Alpha Kappa chapter, Ashland,
met with the local chapter at
Rogue Valley Country club.
Mrs. I. J. Bean, a candidate
for international parliamentar
ian, and Mrs. Dale Roles, Ore
gon education chairman, were
special guests from Roseburg.
Each spoke briefly and urged
everyone to attend the state con
vention, April 27 and 28 in Pen
delton. Mrs. Cleo Browner, Alpha Io
ta, Mrs. W. B. Mc Monigal, Al
pha Kappa, Mrs. Chester Jines,
Gamma Rho, and Mrs. Lyman
Smith, Alpha Lambda gave a re
port of their chapters' activities
during the past year.
Mrs. W. H. Fischer was gen
eral chairman for the event with
Mrs. Tom Makris, Mrs. Robert
Shangle and. Mrs. Smith assist
ing on the invitations, name tag
and flower arrangements. Mrs.

Alpha Lambda chapter met
Monday at the home of Mrs.
George Ice. Mrs. Ice was elected
health chairman for the chapter
and four more members signed
up for "sky watch" duties. Final
plans were completed for the an
nual Lily day sale, which bene
fits the Oregon Society for Crip
led Children and Adults. Mrs.
Smith announced plans for a
luncheon to be held at her home
April 18.

in a review of the book "Court
room," based on the life of the
famous trial lawyer, Samuel
