Be Guest Speaker
At Jaycee Banquet
The Rev. Haddon Robinson,
assistant pastor and youth ed
ucational director for the First
Baptist church. Fifth st. and
Central avfc., Medford, will be
principal speaker this year at
the annual installation banquet
of the Medford Junior Chamber
of Commerce, Charles Jones,
president, has announced.
The installation banquet will
be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday,
April 30, at the Rogue Valley
Country club. Tickets for instal
lation can be obtained from Gar
ry Shuler, chairman, or from
other members of the Jaycees.
Present Jaycee officers are
Jones, Bob Hollenbeck, first vice
president; Bob Bernardi, second
vice president; Garry Shuler,
secretary: and Glenn Jennings,
treasurer. Will Robertson, Don
Yocom, Art VanLeeuwen and
Al Holmes are on the board of
directors.
Tri-Diilrict Meeting
Six Jaycees attended the tri
district meeting of the Oregon
State Junior Chamber of Com
merce last Sunday at Roseburg.
The meeting is held annually be
fore the state convention. Work
ihops were held in which state
wide and nation-wide Jaycee ac
tivities were discussed.
Ron James, district six vice
president, presided at a session
for local secretaries and treasur
er!. John Gustafson, state con
vention chairman from Medford,
presented Medford's bid for the
state convention in 1958. Jones
represented the Medford delega
tion at the meeting.

Kibben and Leonard Howe.

South America, in 1897. The

Strong Earthquake
Recorded at Fordham
New York U.R) An earth
quake, described as very
strong," was recorded today at
Fordham university observatory,
The shock was confirmed at the
Weston, Mass., observatory.
The Rev. Joseph Lynch said
the quake occurred in two
shocks at 3:39.14 a.m. and at
3:46.39 a.m. (PST). He said it
had an unusually high magni
tude of seven or seven and one
half and occurred at a distance
of 3,600 miles in an undeter
mined direction.
At Weston, Mass., the Rev.
Daniel' J. Linehan, director of
the Weston observatory, report
ed similar recordings of a "very
strong" earthquake in the Pa
cific ocean. He placed its loca
tion about . one thousand miles
west of California.

Rare Spring Day
In Most of Nation

A rarity this season, a spring
like day, arrived over most of
the nation Wednesday.
The clear weather came as a
sudden contrast to three weeks
of damaging blizzards, deadly
tornadoes and flooding rains.
Light snow occurred during
the night over the northern
Great Lakes and Montana. Heav
iest accumulation was one-third
inch at Cutbank, Mont., boosting
its snow blanket to four inches.
A warming trend continued in
the west and extended into the
far west with readings in the
50s as far north as Washington
during the night.
YMCA Life Saving
Classes Scheduled
Ashland The first of a series
of YMCA life saving courses for
those interested in life guarding
or teaching swimming will start
at 7 p.m. today at Medford
YMCA pool, according to Bill
Warren, of the Ashland YMCA.
Students passing the 10-week
course also will qualify for Red
Cross and Scouting awards.
There is no fee for the course
but a YMCA membership from
Ashland or Medford is required,
Warren said.
Each session will include a
one hour lecture and IV2 hours
of practical water work, he said.

Open House Slated
At Chuck's Market
An open house will be held at
Chuck's Market, formerly Al's
Market, 838 West McAandrews
rd., Medford, from 8 a.m. fo
7 pjn. April 19 and 20, to ob
serve the store's new manage
ment, according to Charles
Clark, new owner.
Clark purchased the store
from Larry Young last month.
Young owned the store for about
two years.
Clark said work crews are ex
pected to replace the market's
name sign in the next two or
three days. He added that no
remodeling of store was antici
pated soon. No staff or policy
changes will be made, he said.
Clark will reside with his wife
and four children in a residence
adjacent to the market. Before
coming to Medford in March
Clark was a rancher in California.
Ricksha Collision
Kills One in Taipeh
Taipeh, Formosa U.R) One
woman was killed and another
injured seriously Wednesday
when two speeding bicycle rick
shas crashed headon in down
town Taipeh.
Police said a ricksha carrying
the two women raced down a
sloping street and smashed into
an empty ricksha. One of the
passengers died on her way to a
hospital. The two drivers were
only bruised.
