Sobles Enter Plea of Guilty
To Spying for Soviet Russia
New York U.R) Jack and
Myra Soble pleaded guilty to
day to charges of conspiring to
spy for Soviet Russia.
The New York husband and
wife were specifically charged
with conspiring to transport
documents vital to the national
defense of this country to Rus
sia. ; The pair face a possible maxi
mum esntence of 10 years each
in prison. They will be sentenced
May 3.
Ruled Mentally Fit
The change of plea before
Federal Judge Richard H. Levet
came just one day after Levet
ruled that Soble, who had been
undergoing phychiatric treat
ment, was mentally fit to stand
trial.
The two had been indicted
with Jacob Albam, another New
Yorker, on the conspiracy
charge.
Albam, unless he changes his
plea, will stand trial May 22.
In an atmosphere of mystery,
U.S. marshals brought .the tall,
balding Soble and his red-haired
wife Into the courtroom at the
trail of the criminal calendar.
Both seemed to be under a
strain, fidgeting nervously.

six-count indictment."

the accused couple, told Levet

ter with his clients, and that he
had read them the complete sec
tion of the penal law under

group of children walking along
a quiet side street, killing four
of them and critically injuring
two others, sheriff's officers said
Wednesday.
All of the dead and one of
the injured were members of the
same family. ,
Officers identified those killed
in the incident Tuesday as Vir
ginia Bracamonte, 12; Avelino
Bracamonte, 5; Andy Braca
monte, 9; and Patsy Bracamonte,

Critically injured were Rob
erto Bracamonte, 8, and Ray Ar
rellin, 14 Hospital authorities
said these two were so seriously
that they might die within a
few hours.
The driver of the truck, identi
fied by officers as Antonia Oliv
as, a 62-year-old laborer, was
booked in county jail pending
charges of negligent homicide
and driving under the influence
of alcohol.

turn replied "no."
The clerk then read the sec
ond count of the indictment
which stated "on or about Janu
ary, 1942, and continuing to the
date of the return of the indict
ment, Feb. 4, 1957, you did con
spire to receive, obtain and at
tempt to obtain documents, writ
ings and photographs in connec
tion with the defense of the Unit
ed States for delivery to the
U.S.S.R. Russia. How do you
plead, guilty or not guilty?"
In calm voices, the Sobles re
plied "guilty."
