Why is Chicago constantly re

Perhaps it is a little windy but
it is not the windiest city in this
country. The windiest city in the
U.S.A. is New York. Kansas City
is the hottest and Minneapolis is
the coldest. Santa Fe, N.M., has
the most sunshine and Miami,
Fla., the most thunderstorms.

IDENTIFIED Two suspects in the deadly gas blast that
killed six persons in a Los Angeles cafe are Manuel J.
Hernandez, 18, and Manuel J. Chavez, 25. Both suspects
were identified by a witness as two of the four men who
were ordered from the neighborhood bar shortly before
the fatal explosion and fire was touched off.
Time Club." H. C. Cox of San
Francisco, when suffering from
a stomach ailment at the age of
35 was told by physicians he had
less than a month to live. On
March 19, this year, Mr. Cox cel
ebrated his 86th birthday. He
feels fine. He has been elected to
membership in the Borrowed

Flash Fire, Explosion

flash fire and mild explosion
ripped through a section of the
American Petroleum Co. refin
ery here yesterday, causing an
estimated $500,000 damage.
Ike To Be Evacuated
In 'Operation Alert'
Washington (U.R) The White
House said Tuesday President Ei
senhower, his staff, and an emer
gency pool of newsmen will be
evacuated by helicopter during
the civil defense "operation
alert" in July.
Two small "ranger" helicop
ters for the President's use have
been delivered to the Air Force
and are undergoing tests at Olm-
stead Air Force Base in Middle-
town, Pa. White House Press Sec
retary James C. Hagerty said the
tests will continue for at least
another month.
Hagerty said there also will be
test flights, without the Presi
dent aboard, betwen the south
lawn of the White House and
Washington National Airport.
Hagerty expressed the opinion
that these helicopters will not
be used "at any time" to trans
port the President from the
White House to the Burning Tree
Golf club.
Longshoremen Killed
In Astoria Accident
Astoria ;U.R) Two longshore
men were killed Tuesday when a
cargo-loading crane toppled off
a tower on the new 272 foot
ocean-going barge, Pacific No.
2, at the Shepard-Morse mill
dock at Westport.
Authorities identified the vic
tims as Ralph Knutinen of As
toria and Rusty Sumner of Port
land. Bodies of the two men, who
were crushed inside the crane,
still hadn't been removed at
noon. Mill officials said that no
equipment was immediately
available to lift the huge crane

mier David Ben-Gurion is ap
plying pressure to the tradition
ally left wing and anti-American
members of his cabinet to
accept the Eisenhower Middle
East Doctrine, informed sources
said Tuesday.
The reports said he was
threatening to fire the cabinet
members if they do not come
around to his way of thinking.

Farm Loans Approved
Salem : (U.R) The Oregon Sen
ate has passed senate joint res
olution 35 to authorize the State
Department of Veterans Affairs
to borrow up to 122 .million for
its home and farm loan program
for veterans. The present limit
is $81 million.
The measure, which calls for
a constitutional amendment and
would be referred to the voters,
was viewed with apprehension
by Sen. Howard Belton, Canby
Republican.
He said - he was in favor of
helping the veteran in every
feasible way, "but we're rot do
ing the veteran any favor", to
enable him to go in debt up to
$30,000 for a farm under today's
agricultural conditions."
