to radioactive fallout during the
1954 hydrogen bomb test appar
ently suffered no permanent in
juries, according to scientists at
Areonne National Laboratory.
The group is scheduled to re
turn to the islands Tuesday after
completion of radiation tests at
the atomic laboratory in subur
ban Lemont.
The natives arrived here last
Thursday at the invitation of the
government. They were flown
by the Navy from their home
islands of Majuro and Utirik in
the Pacific.
Over 200 Exposed
Argonne spokesmen said the
six were among more than 200
natives on the two Marshal is
lands who were exposed to
radioactive dust and ash from
the H-bomb test.
Dr. Norman Hilberry, director
of the Atomic Energy- Commis
sion laboratory said medical
tests indicated the natives suf
fered no permanent disabilities.
He said a seventh native who
was njt exposed to the fallout
accompanied the group to act
as a "control" in the tests.
An AEC medical specialist,
Dr. Robert A. Conard, said the
islanders suffered skin burns
and loss of hair, but have com
pletely recovered.

she won't give me a divorce
until she is ready. I really love
her and never meant to be un
faithful. Clara got us both into
this thing. I don't want to be
a heel, but I think she'll just
have to take her medicine as I
am now taking mine by being
separated from rny wife.
Clara W. Carl is just evad
ing his responsibilities. He can
talk his wife into giving him
a divorce if he really wants to.
He just hopes to win her back.
After all, I am bearing his
child and I have a right to his
protection. He has no other chil
dren and it is only right for
him to marry me.
Carl now blames me for the
whole thing, but he doesn't men
tion that he took me out twice
before he told me he was mar
ried. Later he told me that while
he loved his .wife, they were
not happy in the physical side
of their married life. Naturally,
when he continued to ask me
out, I thought the marriage was
breaking up anyway.
Carl can never be happy with
his wife even if he could suc
ceed in winning her back. I am
willing to live with him in a
common-law relationship until
he gets a divorce. Isn't that the
only right thing to do?
The Council: It is impossible
to talk of the "right thing to
do" in a case where all rights
and responsibilities have been
so completely violated. Carl
and Clara know that they were
both dead wrong and have no
business blaming one another.
Clara should, first of all, get
it through her head that Carl
neither wants nor loves her and
offers her no hope of marriage.
His wife is most unlikely to be
so kind and obliging as to offer
Carl a divorce any time in the
near future.
Even if she would, Clara may
not be able to get Carl to marry
her and even if he did marry
her, he is unlikely to give her
much "protection" or any form
of happiness. Has she considered
the likelihood of his getting in
volved in a "silly flirtation"
with another girl in his office
a girl very much like herself,
who would "assume" the mar
riage is breaking up?
Clara must stop her wishful
daydreaming about Carl and
figure out what she must do
about herself and her child. She
can base no hopes whatever on
Carl and must decide whether
she wants to keep her child or
give it out for adoption. She
must discuss these matters with
a trained social worker attached
to a recognized family agency.
She can learn to live a decent,
even happy life, if she recog
nizes her own immorality and
foolishness and ceases to blame
others.
The same is true for Carl.
He ought to try to learn some
thing about marriage and its
obligations.

Hold Most Unpaid Bills in N.Y.

unpaid bills in New York are
those owed the grocer, the butch
er, the laundryman.
The hardest to collect are
those owed the dentist.
The "Park Avenue crowd" of
alleged elite are "getting to be
pretty terrible on payment of
bills."
Those are the opinions of Ab
raham Miller, a bill collector,
process server, and tracer of
skipped persons who estimates
that in the last 25 years he has
collected more than 5,000 bills
and served around 500 legal
papers everywhere from city
hall to gangsters' back rooms.
Not Just One Type
' Deadbeatism, he says, cuts
across all layers of civilization.
You just can't pick out one type
of person and say his type leaves
more bills unpaid , than any
other.
"Take actors," said Abe. "I
get quite a few unpaid actors
and actresses. The thing is, you
got to time them when they got
money. If they have it, you'll
get it.
"Take Park Avenue I'd say
25 per cent of the people I deal
with . there are living beyond
their means. The wife has charge
accounts in most of the depart
ment, stores. I've been working

In the old days if I got a Park
Avenue case I'd simply make a
call and it'd be paid.
On the Move
"But now they're away seven
or eight months a year, and you
can't get hold of them.1 Four or
five months in Florida, then
back in town a month or so,
then away someplace else.
"Also, on Park Avenue we
have this thing which is what
we call kept women. A fellow
gets an apartment, and he's liv
ing with a lady friend a la carte.
She comes in to a butcher and
says she's Mrs. Jones, her boy
friend's name, and has this good j
address, ana wants to open a
charge account and the butcher
says gladly. Well, the boy friend
pays, but only as long as they're
on friendly terms."
Abe says dentist bills are the
hardest to collect because "peo
ple put in counter claims that
they can't eat, can't sleep, den
tures fall out you get an upper
or lower plate, you can always
find something wrong with it."

Abe said he goes to Florida
quite often tracing persons who
have skipped town owing bills,
and he's been as far as New
Orleans on this same mission.
He says relatives are valuable
for learning where a person has
gone. "We find that in every
family there's somebody who
doesnt like you." In-laws are
particularly valuable.
