After one person said he saw
a plane go down in the area and
several others reported seeing a
fire in -the same locality, towns
people, state police and Grant
county sheriff's officers started
a search through the swamp.
Little Rock Air Force base, 33
miles north of here, and Adams
Field municipal airport, also at
Little Rock, reported no planes
missing or overdue. There was
speculation that the object
might have been a meteor.

legs that distress so many worn
en. As I have
said, they are
not due to van.'

is no meaicine tnat does any
good. The operations that have
sometimes been performed are a
bit dangerous, and the surgeons
I have talked to were reluctant
to try them.
Now, a woman writes to say
Uiat she had these big legs. She
used to have a terrible time
coughing, until she tried an anti-
histaminic drug. This not only
stopped her cough but, to her
great joy, it caused her ankles to
become slim again. I doubt if
this will work for many people,
but some can try it.
Another woman writes to say
that she went to a great clinic
where they told her that they
knew of no way of helping her
except to have her wear each
day an 18-gauge rubber ban
dage, sometimes called a Roches
ter bandage. Now she puts it on
each morning as soon as she gets
up. She puts it over a light cot
ton' stocking which absorbs the
perspiration. With this, she is
happy because her legs are not
so large. If she has to go out in
the evening, she takes off the
bandage 'and the legs remain
normal in size for a few hours.
Another person reports that
once, when her ankles swelled
badly, her doctor found she had
an acute form of athlete's foot
due to a fungus growing between
her toes. He cleared this up with
an ointment containing sulfur
and a little salicylic acid and
that was the end of the swelling.
Another woman says that part
of her swelling of the legs was
due to fat. She dieted and took
off 30 pounds, and now her legs
are not so ugly.
Help for Cerebral Palsied
Children
I recently read of a school in
Los Angeles where children
with cerebral palsy are being
greatly helped. Many of them
have to be carried in, unable to
walk perhaps unable to talk,
perhaps unable to feed them
selves. They are only able to
grunt or groan. Often, after six
or 18 months, they are sent
home, able to dress themselves,
feed themselves, walk by them
selves, and even talk.
Fortunately, many of these
children have a normal intelli
gence, or even a better than
normal intelligence. In some
cases one great difficulty has
been that at home the mother
did everything for the handil
capped child, and as a result,
the child never learned to do
anything. At the school, the chil
dren are induced to play games
in which they learn to do many
things. For instance, a little boy
is put in a sand-box and given
a spoon. After a while, after
weeks of shoveling sand, he is
able to shovel food into his
mouth.
He is given a board with holes
in it, and is asked to fit the
blocks into the holes. Again, in
this way, he learns to use his
hands and arms and fingers. He
is taught to finger-paint, and this
teaches him to coordinate the
movements of his arms and
hands. A boy will be set down
before an imitation telephone
switch-board, where he has to
put plugs into sockets. With this,
he learns how to stretch out his
arms and control their move
ments. In order to help him
to speak, the teacher may put
a little tab of peanut butter on
the roof of his mouth, and then
get him to lick it off with his
tongue. In this way he learns to
make certain tongue movements
which are needed if he is to pro
nounce certain sounds in speech.
Can a Woman Conceive
After the Menopause?
Quite a few women ask when
they can stop worrying about
getting pregnant: will they be
safe as soon as they stop men
struating? I have asked a num
ber of obstetricians about this,
and most of them tell me that
child-bearing after menstruation
has stopped is very rare. I can
remember having seen perhaps
two women who conceived after
they thought they had had the
menopause. On looking up statis-
tcis, . I find that few women
conceive after the age of 45 and
then most of them abort. It is
somewhat dangerous for a wom
an to have a child after the age
of 45 because there is a larger
than usual chance that the child
can be defective.
Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers
will understand that it would
be impossible for him to answer
requests for information or to at
tempt to diagnose by mail.
