From Camp White
BY SID HOLLINGSWORTH
The creative urge, which has
always been paramount at Camp
White, is going forward today
under the impetus of national
contests, calling for skill in the
use of words.
Writers are encouraged by Ha
Evans, librarian, who conducts a
weekly group meeting for writ
ers and readers. About a dozen
writers gather on Wednesdays
for discussion of current writing
trends, both published and un
published. The novel, the short story,
poetry and prose are under re
view at the meetings, and tests
and rules are considered. At pre
sent, writers are busy finishing
their manuscripts to be entered
in the Hospitalized Veterans
Writing project.
The annual contest entries
must be in the hands of the edi
tors in Chicago April 15.
A wide field is available this
year for cash and other prizes.
These are provided by a vol
unteer group, organized on a
national scale, to stimulate in
terest in this form of activity as
a means of awakening special
talent and in utilizing this med
ium as a means of rehabilitation.
Letters are on file from partic
ipants, attesting to the value of
creative writing in recovery after
illness. Doctors, publishers and
professionals in the writing game
give their services.
Among the active writers at
Camp White, who are members
of the Writer's club, are John A.
Cress, Hal Ronen, W. L. Town
send, Mike Dillon, Walter Grow,
Sam Black, Bill Hickey, Norman
Weaver, E. L. Robinson and
Harry Clark.
Cress, who comes from Van
Nuys, Cahf., has written an art
icle on "Rehabilitation Through
Writing" for the contest. He
urges that attention be' given to
facilities that would enable men
who want to write to make their
work more presentable.
Self expression through writ
ing was one of the first recrea
tional activities to take root at
Camp White. The activity was
publicized in the Dominews and
given encouragement by Jerry
Girard when he was at the helm.
While this group toils with
grammer and form and moves
with the tempo of the new Domi
news, under the editorship of A.
W. Riberdy, another group
operates in the more practical
field of contests conducted by
national advertisers.
Valter Grow has turned his
talents in this direction and has
won several thousand dollars
through the "system" he has
enveloped and his knack in giv
ing acceptable "answers."
J. Clifford Barry is working
overtime on the Mercury con
test, sending in the "last line" of
jingles in hopes of winning one
of the snappy models being offered.
Miss Minnie Bryant has issued
h- third mimeographed "Story
of Camp White" which she plans
to distribute through her contact
with the American Legion auxil
iary. A complete summary of act
ivities with a brief history of the
fbgnding of the domiciliary is re
9&wed in the work.

is wnat Harry did for a living

has a few of his tools now and
some samples of the silky, col

imported from the old world.
Fifty girls and boys of the
Talent High school band came
to Camp White under sponsor

The Talent school band, with
20 others, will compete at
