Eisenhower Angrily
Denies Helicopter
For Golf Course Use

dent Eisenhower angrily de
nied yesterday that he plans to
use helicopters to whisk him
to the golf course.
It was one of his rare news
conference displays of red
faced displeasure. He abrupt
up cut off a newsman who
suggested that helicopters to
be used by the White House
would be to expedite the pres
idential golf game.
The question was put to
him by a reporter who wanted
to know if Mr. Eisenhower, in
the interest of reducing the
federal budget, would be will
ing to give up the two heli
copters which were to get the
President to the golf course
"a little faster."
Mr. Eisensower's eyes biased
as he snapped that he did not
think much of the question.
No helicopters had been pro
cured for him to go to the
golf course, and that would
be all.
Bend Junior College
Proposal Approved
Salem (U.R) A proposal to
allow the Bend school district to
call an election- to give voters
a chance to approve establish
ment of a full fledged junior col
lege was approved by the state
board of education here yester
day. A favorable vote on the pro
posal by the school district
voters would allow the school
board to set up and maintain the
first publicly maintained junior
college in the state.
The proposal calls for the
Bend school system to employ
the staff and administer the
school.
The board also voiced ap
proval in principal of legislation
which would allow it to operate
Oregon Technical institute at
Klamath Falls without going
through the division of voca
tional education.
Airport Revenue Last
Month Totaled $3,869
Revenue from Medford air
port concessions totaled $3,869.-
27, according to the February re
port of municipal activities. The1
total includes $2,903.67 from
building rentals and the re
mainder from land fees, gas and
oil, tie downs electrical service
and miscellaneous concessions.
The report showed air traffic
through Medford totaled 4,600
planes, including 685 air carrier,
3,863 civil, 48 Air Force, and
four Navy.
A total of 2.795 passengers
boarded commercial aircraft in
Medford and 2,833 landed here
during February. Mail shipments
from Medford totaled 7,542
pounds, freight 8,778 pounds and
express 1,115 pounds. Mail ship
ment arriving in Medford totaled
13,316 pounds, freight 6,551 and
express 2,775 pounds.
Fire Department Report
During February the Medford
fire department responded to
44 alarms, of which 25 were
dwellings, four trash fires, one
airport standby and false alarms,
the report showed. The Medford
rural fire district responded to
six alarms four of which were
for dwellings. Two were false
alarms.
The fire marshal reported 50
inspections during February.
Twenty-one of these were busi
ness occupancies, five apartment
houses, four buildings of public
assembly and three hospitals.
The report showed that 104
orders and recommendations
were issued for the removal of
Joint Memorial
Passes Unanimously
Salem (U.R) House joint me'
morial 4 calling for deeping and
widening of the Columbia river
channel from Vancouver, Wash.,
to The Dalles, was ready for the
governor's desk today after pass
ing the House unanimously late
yesterday.
There was no debate on the
measure which asks Congress to
proceed with all possible speed
to deepen the channel to 35 feet
and widen it to 500 feet.
Rep. Katherine Musa, The
Dalles, who with her senator hus
band, Ben Musa, sponsored the
memorial, said improvement of
the channel was vital for the
welfare of the whole inland em
pire area especially since com
pletion of The Dalles dam.
The memorial also passed the
Senate unanimously.
Woman's Faith in
Man Is Restored
New York (U.R) A Los An
geles woman had her faith in
mankind bolstered considerable
Wednesday.
Mrs. Alice Morris left her
purse, containing $2,035 and a
quantity of jewelry, on the seat
of a taxicab. The driver,-Louis
Firester, 43, found the handbag
and took it to a police station.
Police then traced Mrs. Morris
to her hotel.
"I knew the bag would be re
turned," she said, "because the
driver had an honest face."
She gave Firester a $100 re
ward for his honesty.

Skeleton Circus
Train Starts Tour
Saratosa, Fla. (U.R) The cir
cus train, a mere skeleton of its
former size, was ready to leave
winter quarters of the "Greatest
Show on Earth" today without
the frills and fanfare that once
marked its annual departure on
the spring and summer tour.
A few special railroad cars for
animals and three coaches for a
handful of performers made up
the train which in past years in
cluded two full sections of more
than 50 cars each. Othpr per
formers and circus officials al
ready had left for New York by
train, plane, car and bus.
Left . behind in the 200-acre
winter quarters of the Ringling
Brothers, Barnum & Bailey Cir
cus were about 100 silvery and
red railroad cars, which were be
ginning to show the effects of
heavy rains and the Florida sun.
The decline of the circus train
is only one of many changes in
the 1957 version of the "Greatest
Show on Earth."
The big top is gone, lost in the
middle of last season when
owner John Ringling North
pulled the circus off the road
and said it would never again
play under canvas. Large indoor
arenas and a few baseball parks
will form the stages for this
year's show.
