Dermatologist Says Acne May Be
Result of Two Stresses Joining

Charged With
Staging Parlies
Elkhart, Ind. (U.R) A group
of Elkhart university students
today came to the defense of
three faculty members charged
with staging drinking parties for
coeds who wanted to "benefit
their scholastic efforts."
Police said seven teen-aged
coeds signed statements saying
they went on drinking parties
with the teachers. They said one
of the teachers would comfort
them with "fatherly kisses"
when they got sick from drink
ing. Teachers Free on Bond
The teachers were free on
$300 bond. Authorities said they
would be arraigned Monday on
charges of furnishing liquor to
minors. They face maximum
penalties of $500 fines and six
months in jail if convicted.
The teachers were identified
as Hugh A. Woosley, 40, head of
medical courses at the univer
sity; and Frank Schultz-, 28, and
Robert Zimmerman, 32, labora
tory instructors.
In their statements, ihe girls
told of emptying more than 100
cans of beer afone of the drink
ing parties. Police said one of the
girls also charged the instructors
with supplying mixed drinks at
the party.
On "occasions" when some of
the girls got sick from too much
liquor, Woosley tried to soothe
them 'With "fatherly kisses," the
statements said.

When these verbal stresses are
removed, the production sub
sides, and so. Dr. Lawrence rea
soned, it would seem that "dur
ing periods of quiescence the oil
is stagnant in the follicle, hard
ens, and forms a plug."
Then another period of stress
comes along, the plug prevents
the secretion from reaching the
surface of the skin and produces
an irritating impaction or for
eign body in the follicle of its
opening. This in turn sets up
the whole inflammatory process
"which is characteristic of acne."
Dr. Lawrence is a San Fran
cisco dermatologist. In response
to questions, he stated emphatic
ally that acne was not an al
lergy. This had point, since often
chocolate and other sweets are
blamed. He did not forbid sweets
to his acne patients, he said, but
he did insist upon a well-balanc
ed diet for reasons of general
health.
The treatment of acne was
"trying to counter-act the ef
fects of the oil-gland activity,"
which, he granted was not so
easy to do."
He recommended "good skin
hygiene," that is, frequent wash
ings with plain soap and water
for which he had only the
kindest words.
"The cosmetic Industry has
made a tremendous play at try
ing to convince the public that
the trouble with their skin, par
ticularly the female skin, is that
it is too dry and therefore it
follows they should anoint them
selves in a sacramental fashion
every night otherwise they will
be dried up prunes in a very
short time," and that isn't so,
he said. The acne, victims pick
up that idea and do themselves
harm with more oil for already
oily skins, he added.
Monkeys Show No III
Effects in High Ride
Madison, Wis. (U.R) Two
monkeys reached an altitude of
90,000 feet recently in a 62-hour
balloon ride as part of an ex
periment to learn about the
effects of cosmic rays.
The University of Wisconsin
scientist said the ride left no
visible effects on the animals.
In fact, tests showed that their
behavior and learning abilities
were as good, if not better, than
those of two monkeys that stay
ed behind.
The scientists are now study
ing the effects of brain injuries
by implanting radioactive co
balt seeds in the monkeys. The
seeds seem to cause a total loss
of memory, apparently because
they send off meaningless brain
waves that disturb the rest of
the brain tissue, the scientists
reported.
Besides monkeys, the research
ers are using mice and tiny fruit
flies to study the effects of radiation.
Parents Blamed for
Antics of Teen-Agers

bate Judge William P. Wright
urges parents of teen-agers to
"keep a firm hand on their car
keys and their children."
Wright said most of the chil
dren appearing before him are
not criminals, but "wayward
through the acts or omissions of
their parents.
"The lack of mature judgment
is no greater now than it was in
the horse and buggy days," he
said.
"But unlike the horse, which
often showed more sense than
its driver, the gas buggy can
keep on going until stopped by
the law or a ditch."
Communist China
Releases Priest
After Six Years
Hong Kong (U.R) Commun
ist China released an American
Catholic priest, the Rev. Ful
grace Gross, of Omaha, Neb.,
from prison today six years after
his arrest.
Reached by long-distance tele
phone from Hong Kong to Shang
hai, Father Gross told the United
Press he expected to get out of
the country "within one or two
weeks."
"I intend to get in touch
with the British consulate
about when and how I am
going to leave China," he said.
Second Released
He was the second imprison
ed American to be released by
Chinese Reds this year. Eight
other Americans still are behind
bars in Communist China.
Gross, 53, said he is in good
health.
He was arrested in Tsingtao
March 29, 1951, and later trans
ferred to Shanghai prison.
First in China
Gross first went to China in
1932, two years after being or
dained a priest. He returned to
China from a trip home in 1951
and shortly afterward was. ar
rested along with Bishop Am
brose Pringer who was released
last August.
Of the eight remaining Amer
ican prisoners in Red China
jails, five, are Catholic priests
and four are civilians. Two of
the priests, Jesuits John A.
Houle of Glendale, Calif., and
Charles McCarthy of San Fran
cisco, are scheduled to be re
leased June 15 when their prison
terms end.
Man Makes Career
Of Creating Voices
For Commercials
New York U.R Allen Swift
has made a career out of putting
spots before our eyes and ears.
Swift does the voices for those
short "spot" , radio and TV com
mercials. Among the 400
"voices" he has created during
the past four yea's are those of
a coffee pot, spark plug, piston,
kitchen sink, pencil, bottle arid
flashlight battery.
Swift is able to give compet
ing brands of the same product
different voices. At present, for
example, he does three different
cigarettes, five different gaso
lines and a couple of competing
candy bars.
The 33-year-old actor got his
start on the "Howdy Doody" TV
show, doing voices for most of
the puppets. Ad agency execu
tives used to call up and ask fop
"Mr. Bluster's v o i c e," or
"Howdy Doody's voice," and
Swift would answer each call.
After a while, they began call
ing directly for Swift.
He feels there is no danger of
running out of voices. The sup
ply is endless because each one
is a mixture of age, geography,
personality, background and tex
ture. Swift said the hardest voice
to imitate is the one closest to
"normal" becaue it has no color,
nothing to make it stand out."
Recently, Swift made "spot"
commercial history by giving a
rhinoceros a high, squeaky voice.
"That," he said with pride,
"was for shock effect. Most peo
ple expect a rhino to talk with a
deep voice. They don't expect a
squeaky sound. When they hear
it, they pay more attention."
Swift enjoys throwing adver
tising executives into a dither
with what he calls his "straight
forward, professional approach."
When asked to create a voice
for a pencil, for example. Swift
will say, "What color?" This
leads to some hurried confer
ences and the answer comes
back: "A yellow pencil."
Swift asks, "Mechanical?"
There's another conference.
"Actually," Swift said, "one
pencil sounds like another."

motive engineers have come up
with a device that simulates the
action of a human hand in open
ing and closing the glove com
partments in cars.
The idea has helped the engi
neers to increase the life of the
light bulb inside the compart
ment by more than 50 times.
Switching from six to 12-volt
electrical systems in some cars
caused a light-failure problem.
Bulbs used in the 12-volt system
have much finer filaments that
were j2rred loose by repeated
slamming.
- By experimenting with differ
ent types of bulbs and changing
the location of the sockets, the
engineers were able to extend
the life of bulbs to more than
1,000 slams each. That's the
equivalent of between two and
three years for the average mo
torist ' .
Current taxes take about .29
cents out of each dollar spent
in the United States for the pur
chase of a new automobile, the
industry estimates.
Foreign Air Routes Discussed by Group
