Health Agency Report
Said To Definitely
Link Cancer, Smoking
Atlanta U.R) The Atlanta
Constitution revealed in a copy
righted story today a report
sponsored by four national
health agencies which says flat
ly that cigarette smoking causes
lung cancer.
The Constitution said the re
port, "highly confidential and
not yet released officially, estab
lishes the most positive link
t)und by any scientific group to
date" between cigarette smok
ing and lung cancer.
Heart Disease Unlinked
But the report said no con
vincing evidence was found that
smoking is a cause of heart dis
ease, according to the Constitu
tion. '
The report was made by a
study group sponsored by the
American Cancer society, the
National Cancer Institute, the
American Heart association, and
the National Heart Institute, the
Constitution said.
A group of seven of the na
tion's leading scientists has ap
proved of the report but the four
agencies have not yet done so
the Constitution said, and they
may make minor changes in its
final form.
"The sum total of scientific
evidence establishes beyond rea
sonable doubt that cigarette
smoking is a causative factor in
the rapidly increasing incidence
of human epidermoid carcinoma
cancer of the lung," the report
said.
Direct Xelaiionship
"Lung cancer occurs much
more frequently (5 to 15 times)
gmong cigarette smokers than
among non-smokers and there
is direct relationship between
incidence of lung cancer and the
g-nount smoked.
"It is estimated that on a life
time basis one of every 10 men
ho smoke over two packs a day
ill die of lung cancer. The com
rrable risk among non-smokers
is one out of 173.
The scientists urged in their
O report that researchers try to
find and if possible eliminate
the substance in cigarettes or
the cigarette smoke that they
believe causes the lung cancer.
Negro Wins Fight
To Use Library
Purcellville, Va. U.R) A Ne
gro interior decorator has won
his fight to borrow a book on
how to make French drapes
from the Purcellville public li
brary.
The trustees of the public li
brary in this little northern Vir
ginia town voted Thursday to
open the library to Negroes.

Murray tried last Jan. 10 to bor
row the book on French drape
making. The library refused.
- Murray protested to the trus
tees. He was told that to lend
him a book would not be in the
spirit of the library's founders.
Murray didn't see it that way.
He said his taxes helped support
the library and Virginia law for
bids racial barriers in any libra
ry supported by public funds. He
threatened to sue.
The trustees took the matter
to the county supervisors and
the town council. Both voted
that the library should comply
with state law.

before they voted that Murray's
attorney planned to file suit un
less Murray was told by Friday
that he could borrow the drape
making book.
The trustees voted 7-5 to open
the library to Negroes. They also
voted in favor of providing Ne
groes with bookmobile service.

Butt Falls Granga
A supper in honor of the
basketball team who won the
County Class B championship
was sponsored by the Butte Falls
Grange and held in the high
school auditorium.
Green Shamrock shaped
doilies cushioned the center
pieces on each table. The cham
pionship trophy with names en
graved was used as the center
piece at the honor table. Irish
potatoes served as holders for
green ' candles Nut cups were
also of the green variety.
Along with the other cakes
served was a decorated one
bearing the inscription "Basket
ball Championship" made by
Mrs. Elga Abbott.

this season were Bill Irwin,
Jimmy Irwin, Pat Conley, Mike
Conley, Donald Ellis, Jerry Dil
len, Ronnie Remsen, Dean
Smith, Larry Cavin, Jerry Fer

Dayle Hawkins, manager, and
Russel Scott comanager. Arthur
Backlund is coach. Yell leaders
were Kay and Dclores Brown
and Joyce Irwin.
Ted Fredenburg gave a few
words of welcome and congratu
lations to the team and their
coach. L. O. Machlan, high
school superintendent, spoke
briefly and commended the team
on its good sportsmanship at all
the games. He also commended
Backlund and his good work.
Glenn Kline, county agricul
ture agent who had spent nine
months as an exchange student
in New Zealand, showed pic
tures taken there. Dairying plays
a prominent part in their lives
and their method of curing en
silage in pits proves quite satis
factory and they use modern
machinery for milking.
Gaming Device Storage
Banned by Ordinances
Portland (U.R) Two ordi
nances banning the warehousing
of punchboards. pinball games,
digger machines and other such
devices were passed unanimous
ly by the Portland city council
yesterday.
No one appeared at the coun
cil meeting to argue against
passage of the two ordinances.

London (U.R) Britain's Labor
Party called for immediate gen
eral elections today and said
Conservative vote losses in two
by-elections Thursday showed
the government "is completely;
discredited."
Both by-elections were in
"safe" Conservative constitu
encies and returned Conserva
tive candidates to Parliament.

virtory was sharply cut from
the general elections of 1955.
Journalist Phillip Goodhart,
whose American parentage
sparked a minor dispute when
he was nominated, held Becken

But the Conservative major
ity at Beckenham dropped from
21.237 in 1955 to 12,176 Thurs

and guests who gathered aboard

Sevier pointed to xne new mar-

Held on Drug Charges
Portland (U.R) Federal
Narcotics agents late yesterday
arrested the drummer in Nate
Zusman's Desert Room club and
booked him on a charge of
heroin sale and possession.
Zusman was a recent witness
before the Senate Rackets Com
mittee. The drummer, James Vernon
Turner, 35, was slated to appear
before the U S. commissioner today.
