vania Railroad freight train sin
gle handed.
It wasn't easy.
The long train slid to a halt
Wednesday four miles out of the
Potomac railroad yards when its
engineman couldn t throw a
switch up ahead.
Help was called. Shouts and
alarms filled the air. Technicians
probed the switch.
Fifty-six minutes later the
trouble was discovered: The life
less body of the devil-may-care
mouse lay wedged between two
electrical contacts breaking the
switch circuit.

Back Stairs: Hagerty Not Candidate

tary James C. Hagerty seemed
genuinely amused by a suggest
ion that he be a Republican can
didate for governor of New
York.
Hagerty was at sea with
President Eisenhower en route
here when the Binghamton, N.Y.
Press proposed him as the best
GOP choice to run against Dem
ocratic Gov. Averell Harriman.
Hagerty took it first as a joke,
but when he found out reporters
were questioning him seriously,
his disavowals of political ambi
tions took on a note of intense
sincerity.
Nautical Style
When Hagerty went aboard
the destroyer Barton to have
dinner with the commanding of
ficer, . Cmdr. Raymond Pett,
photographers were lined up at
the ship's rail in what they re
garded as high nautical style. As
Hagerty came up the ship's lad
der, one of the Washington
press party shouted, "Hail to
the next governor of New York"
and a photographer sawed away
industriously on his harmonica
with "Sidewalks of New York."
The Navy went all out in ef
forts to show the President a
good time en rcute to Bermuda.
It is tremendous recognition in
the Navy to participate in a pres
idential cruise. This filters down
to the lowest ranking seaman
who enjoys writing home to
folks that his ship and even the
sailor himself sailed with the
President.
The Castle Harbour hotel here
where the White House staff and
press corps are berthed will have
to go some to beat Navy food.
Hagerty said everybody seemed
to take on weight aboard the
President's ship, the Canberra,
but Mr. Eisenhower himself
seemed to be watching his diet,
eating unusually small breakfasts.
BOMB KILLS FOUR
Treviso, Italy (U.R) Four
persons, including two children,
were killed here when a war
time bomb exploded, police said
today. Armando Nicoletti, 36,
found the German-make bomb
while digging on his farm. He,
his two children and another
farmer started playing with it
Wednesday, causing it to ex
plode, police said.
Cooks .aboard the accompany
ing destroyers seemed determin
ed to put their passengers ashore
bulging at the seams. On St. Pat
rick's Day cooks aboard the
Wood produced buns with green
icing for breakfast.
The president took a lot of
kidding from the crew of the
Canberra because of his Army
background. At a "happy hour"
of amateur entertainment
aboard the Canberra, the bulk
of song parodies and jokes dealt
with the matter of having a five
star general on a naval ship. In
one of the skits a sailor taking
the part of a ship's captain was
instructing the crew on how to
speak to a president, saying
"when you see the president on
deck speak in a, happy smiling
manner and say to him, 'Good
morning. Mister President.' " A
sailor was then asked to repeat
his instructions. He said, "I
would do it this way 'Good
morning Mister President, Sir." "
This is Mr. Eisenhower's sixth
trip out of the country as presi
dent. Previously he has gone to
Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, Gen
eva and Panama.
This also is his longest absence
from the country since entering
the White House.
