BOTTOMS UP Sally Is a dog that can hold her own
her own bottle that is. The part Beagle pup owned by
three-year-old Susan Patterson of Salinas, Calif., has been
performing the feat with all fours ever since she did it
quite by accident while being fed in the lap of her mis
tress with a doll bottle.
Irish Parliament To Elect de Valera
Dublin (U.R) The Irish
parliament meets today to elect
74-year-old Earn on de Valera as
the nation's premier for the
eighth time.
The tall, thin chief of the
Fianna Fail Soldiers of Destiny
Party starts the greatest test of
his political career when he suc
ceeds outgoing Premier John A.
Costello.
His new government faces
some of the sorest trials in the
republic's 35 years of existence.
They include unemployment
which is now at a post-war high
of 91,000, a flood of emigration
and an adverse balance of trade
that sees Ireland spending 14
million pounds (S39.2-million)
more for imports than she re
ceives for exports.
Added to these is stagnation
in both agriculture and business
expansion because of a credit
squeeze.
Irish voters endorsed the
Brooklyn-born leader's party in
a general election March 5 after
it had spent three years In oppo
sition to Costello's coalition gov
ernment. .
Hearing on Construction of Sewer Continued by Council
A public hearing on construc
tion of a sanitary sewer in block
4, South Sea addition, was con
tinued by the Medford city
council last night when several
residents of the area protested
the sewer.
Mayor John Snider requested
a complete report on the pro
posed project be prepared for
the next council meeting.
Objecting to the sewer project
were Mark M. Kline, a repre
sentative of Joe Maxfield and
Mrs. Lucille James, who live on
Earhart st. They said they al
ready had sufficient sewage fa
cilities from septic tanks and
would not be benefited by the
new sewer.
Suggests Inspection '
Councilman Fred Robinson
suggested a sanitation expert in
spect the area and Councilman
Paul Meyers pointed out the
area is near the proposed route
of the Bear Creek - Hawthorne
park freeway through Medford,
which could affect possible plan
ning in the area.
The council authorized instal
lation of a water main on South
Grape st. from Melrose to Stew
art ave., after a public hearing.
A petition signed by about 70
per cent of the property owners
in the area requested the proj
ect, which is the initial phase of
the development' of the street,
according to city officials. Bids
also were called for the water
main projects.
The council called a public
hearing April 16 on a proposal
to amend the city zoning ordi
nance regarding requirements to
provide four square feet of park
ing to each square foot of gross
building area in limited com
mercial (class IIIA) districts. The
proposal would apply to new
buildings and remodeled estab
lishments. The Medford planning com
mission recommended the
change last week following a
public hearing.
Condemnation Procedure
Condemnation procedure
against Dr. I. D. Phipps, 923
East Main st., Medford, to secure
a right-of-way easement for the
southeast Medford trunk sewer i
was approved by the council.
Negotiations with Dr. Phipps 1
for the easement have continued
for several months, City Mana- !
ger Robert Duff said. No alter- i
nate route would be feasible, he
added.
The section of the trunk sew-
er system affected extends from
Barnett rd. north through the
west boundary of the Rogue
Valley hospital property, north
through Dr. Phipps' property to
serve Country Club Manor sub
division and to provide a trunk
system for property east of
Black Oak drive to Hillcrest rd.
Contracts were awarded Cra
ter Lake Motors Inc., Medford,
for two cab-ahead dump trucks
to replace 1949 Chevrolet and
1951 Dodge dump trucks. New
trucks were considered neces
sary because maintenance costs
were becoming high on old
trucks. Duff said.
Other Bids
Low bid from Crater Lake
Motors was $6,418. Other bids
were submitted by McCormick
Farm Equipment, $6,842.64;
Courtesy Chevrolet, $7,291.94:
Haupert Tractor company, $7,
830; Parsons Motors, $8,242; ana
Olson Mack Sales. $15,796.
The council denied a request
from the Table Rock Sanitary
district for 24 connections in
that district to the Medford
sewer system. Duff pointed out
at a recent council meeting a
matter of "council policy" was
involved in the request.
Present council policy is "no
service outside of city." The city
manager added the area proba
bly never would be eligible for
annexation to Medford.
Extra Width Driveway
A request from Myron Corco
ran for an extra width driveway
on his property on the east side
of Riverside ave. and north of
McAndrews rd. was approved.
In return Corcoran has agreed
to abandon one of two drive
ways that now serve his prop
erty on the north and provide
one driveway about 45 feet in
length for an off-street parking
area to serve a minimum of 30
cars.
The council accepted petitions
from property owners on New
town st. from Dakota to Stew
art aves. protesting a paving
project in that area and from
property owners on Roberts rd.
east of Springbrook rd. in the
newly annexed Grandview-Ken-wood
area protesting a sanitary
sewer.
