KEEPING THE PEACE An army tank moves down an Havana street after an out
break of violence in which rebels attacked the presidential palace in Havana. The
Cuban Army said the attempted assassination of President Filgencio Batista ended in
bloodshed, death and failure for the handful of student revolutionaries who staged it.
At least 36 persons, including a U. S. citizen were killed and more than a score
wounded.

went to work as soon as she
could and supported Tom
through college.
I realize that Gertrude has
made sacrifices for Tom, but I
want to have my own home
especially now that we are going
to have a baby.' My husband has
no right to break the promise he
made me before we were mar

busy planning for me and mak
ing a home for me. Now she has
nobody in the world but me.
When I married Peggy, I had
hoped Gertrude 'would realize
that she must make plans to
broaden her life and to set up
her own apartment. Unfortunate
ly, she hasn't been well during
this time and has been unable
to do this.
How can I walk out on my sis
ter when she isn't in the best of
health and has nobody to turn
to? Is that a reasonable, human
thing to do? Gertrude barely
makes enough money to support
herself. I can contribute toward j
her support, but she won't -accept
that. She really doesn't ask
I anything for herself.
The Council: It is a very tough
thing for any man to have the
responsibility for making two
women happy. He will usually
wind up, like Tom, with making
them both unhappy.
Tom should realize it is not
true that Gertrude "doesn't ask
anything for herself." She is ask
ing for a great deal, but she asks
for it cleverly, under the guise
of being willing to make further
sacrifices for Tom's happiness.
Gertrude has Tom bound on
the altar of her "sacrifices." 6he
undoubtedly meant well. She
did not realize what she was do
ing, but with every new sacrifice
she tied Tom tighter to her. She
needed him more than he needed
her, for she systematically elim
inated from her life everything
that could have brought her per
sonal happiness and threw on
him the responsibility for mak
ing her happy.
Once Tom recognizes these
facts he may be able to cope
with the problem a little better.
Should he leave his sister alone
and sick? There are many factors
to consider. If she is seriously ill
and needs help, he can hardly
do this.
If she is in good health outside
of the difficulties of the men
opause, it is possible that a
change In living conditions will
do her good. The effort of setting
up a new life and a new home,
even on limited means, may pull
her out of a morass of depend
ency and self-pity.
Tom can help Gertrude to
ward a new and fuller life by
pointing out the many oportuni
ties for happiness and social act-
tiviti'ei that exist In the world
outside of him. If Gertrude had
this larger, more interesting life,
it is even- possible that Peggy
would have less objection to
their all living together.
