ued an investigation today into
the death of a two-year-old
Brownsville boy who died in a
Portland hospital from a brain
injury.
Linn county District Attorney
Courtney Johns said the child's
mother, Mrs. Frank Dietz, said
she spanked the youngster Satur
day night and that he "sudden
ly acted peculiar."
An autopsy was scheduled to
determine the exact cause of
death, Johns said.
The child's mother and a rela
tive took the young baby to a
hospital in Eugene and the fol
lowing day he was transferred to
Doernbecher hospital in Portland.

Compulsory Sewer
Construction Sought
Hillsboro (U.PJ Dr. Charles
Newberry, Washington county
health officer, filed a certificate
with the county court yesterday
asking that it invoke compulsory
construction of a sewage system
in the West Slope sanitary dis
trict. Voters of the district turned
down a bond issue to finance a
proposed sewage project by a 669
to 611 vote this week.
Dr. Newberry said that a
health and sanitation emergency
exw'.s in the general area em
braced by the district and banned
further construction with plans
to include septic tank sewage
disposal.
The move was expected to halt
about 90 per cent of all new con
struction in the fast growing
Portland suburb and also compli
cate the resale of existing buildings.
Zellerbach Reports
Successful Year
San Francisco U.PJ Crown
Zellerbach Corporation, with a
host of new records in sales,
earnings and production, today
called 1956 "the most success
ful year" in the firm's 86-year
history.
President A. B. Layton, In his
annual report to stockholders,
said net income last year reach
ed $50 million, an increase of
13.4 per cent over 1955. This re
turn was worth $3.53 a share
of common stock as compared
with 53.11 in 1955, Layton said.
Layton was cautiously opti
mistic about 1957. He said It
shows "some indications of ten
derness in the market demand
for some of our products," but
is "balanced favorably" by new
plants at Elk Falls, B.C., and
Antioch, Calif.

Seal Rock Man Dies
In Collision oi Cars
Newport (U.R) G. B. John
son, 61, Seal Rock, a retired
Portland fireman, was killed ear
ly today in an automobile col
lision on the Oregon Coast high
way about a quarter-mile south
of Waldport.
Lincoln county Coroner Bob
Bateman said Johnson was driv
ing north about 2:15 a.m. when
his car collided with an auto
driven by Walter Davis of Helix.
Davis, his wife, son Billy and
Davis' uncle, Clifford Johnson,
all were hospitalized here. An
other son, Jack, escaped iiijury.
Kaiser Corporation
Tells Net Earnings
Oakland U.R Kaiser In
dustries Corporation announced
today net earnings of $14,971,
000 in 1956, its first year of
full control of the Henry J.
Kaiser Company which it ac
quired a year ago today.
The Henry J. Kaiser Com
pany holds 80 per cent of the
common stock of Kaiser Steel, 37
per cent of Kaiser Aluminum,
and 30 per cent of Permenente
Cement. A Kaiser spokesman
said the earning figure worked
out to 72 cents a share on Kaiser
Industries common stock.

ticket in red ink.
The lawmakers adjourned the
35th Legislature at 4:07 a.m.
after approving a two-year pro
gram that will cost millions of
dollars more than the state will
have available to spend.
Gov. Albert D. Rosellini in
dicated that a special session
would be necessary within six
months to raise new taxes.
The governor told newsmen
there was no need for a special
session immediately, but that if
an audit showed the budget
"substantially" out of balance
legislators should return as soon
as possible. Democratic law
makers said May 1 was under
consideration as a starting date.

Board Suggests Wage Hike for Railroaders
Washington (U.R) A presi
dential board set up to investi
gate a year-old railroad wage
dispute today recommended
wage increases of 26V4 cents an
hour over the next three years,
plus cost of living increases.
The employees involved are
mostly road brakemen, yard con
ductors and brakemen, and yard
masters. In its report to the President,
the board said it hoped that the
parties involved, 175 Class I rail
roads and about 160,000 mem
bers of the Brotherhood of Rail
road Trainmen, "will not view
our recommendations in terms of
victory of defeat, but rather as a
basic approach t6 a just result."
