Today, many physicians feel
that tuberculosis in man has al
most disappeared, but unfortu

not true. I
read now that
among the
8.000,000 peo

New York
City. 24,221,
known to the
health authori
ties, have ac

losis. Doubtless, many more are
concealing their illness, or do
not know that it is tubercular
in nature. Many of the persons
whose cases are reported are
found to have the disease in an
advanced form. The cost to the
city of caring for these persons
is S50 million a year. Obviously,
people with active tuberculosis
of the lungs could help their fel
low men so much by not spray
ing the air constantly with tu
bercle bacilli. They should hate
to be spreading death about
them.

Complaint of Dead
Dogs Goes to Sheriff
The county court Monday
turned over to the sheriff and
dog control officer a complaint
from a property owner in the
Jacksonville area concerning the
dumping of about 30 dead dogs
on property about two miles
south of Jacksonville on the old
Jacksonville Hill rd.
According to the court, the
dogs were apparently left there i
at various intervals in the past
several weeks. Some appeared to
have been killed by gun shots or
blows on the head, the court
stated.
The court has been unable to
determine who left the dogs
there and no plans have been ;
made for removal of the car- j
casses.
must now be 70 or older. She
says she wanted to keep busy, so
when her duties at home were
done, she went back to college.
She says she maintained a B plus
average, and the only difficulty
she experienced was that it took
her a little longer to study and
take things in than it did when
she was young.
In today's mail there is a letter
from a woman who is out of
patience with the idea that any
woman should want to find some
useful work after her responsibil
ties are ended and she has moved
out of the big house into a small
apartment. My c o r r espondent
fumes at the thought of anyone
in such a comfortable state be
ing foolish enough to go huntuig
for a job. She thinks that any
woman not soft in the head will
just be happy to stretch out and
rest. Doubtless, many women
will feel that way, while others
won't. Some will want to go on
being useful, or they will find
that to do nothing is horribly
boring..
Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers
will understand that it would be
impossible for him to answer re
quests for information or to at
tempt to diagnose by mail.

the controversial "key district" j

that no agreement was reached.
The measure would give state ;

funds. I
Portland educators claim they ;
stand to lose $4 million in state j
money under the measure if the

Representing those in favor of
the measure included Leonard
