Alter Bicycle Trip
Milwaukee U.R Frank
Rzonca. 61. returned to his Mil
waukee home feeling as chip
per and spry as ever after a 270
mile bicycle trip to Springfield,
111.
"I just did it as a lark." said
Rzonca. who rides his bicycle
repularly on the streets of Mil
waukee. "Just wanted to see if
I was still in shape."
He proved to himself his con- ;
dition was still good by turning
the trip into a sort of marathon.
He left Milwaukee on a Tuesday
afternoon and arrived at Spring
field the following Saturday,
completing the trip in less than
four days.
"My only real stop along the
way was for a few hours sleep
at Troy. 111., he said. "My other
stops were only for food and re
freshments, then I'd continue on
my way."
Rzonca visited a sister at
Springfield for a few days, then
made the return trip by train.
"I had good luck on my bi
cycle trip," Rzonca said. "The
weather was good and my bike
held up fine all the way."
Rzonca's luck hasn't always
been that good. Last winter a
Milwaukee judge fined him S50
for reckless driving after his bi
cycle hit a wire fence on a city
viaduct. Rzonca suffered a bro
ken leg in the accident.

Public Support of
Campaign Asked
By Safety Council
Public support of a campaign
to reduce pedestrian accident
hazards was requested, at a re
cent meeting of the Medford
Saety council
Safety council action recom
mended by the committee as
signed to the proj t included a
full scale public education pro
gram, sponsorship of a poster
contest in city schools and coop
eration with service clubs which
desire to participate.
Enforca Ordinance
The Rev. John Ilg of Sacred
Heart church, chairman of the
committee, noted that enforce
ment of present jaywalking ordi
nances would be effective only
with popular support. He ex
plained that wide publicity re
garding the need for such a pro
gram was necessary before of
ficial enforcement could be ef
fected. Further study of the enforce
ment phase will be made before
enforcement is recommended, he
added. Other members of the
committee include Emerson An
derson and Grant Borquin, all of
Medford.
Aubrey Loper, president of
the council, said the safety coun
cil was interested in receiving
public comment on the proposed
project. Letters may be ad
dressed to the Medford Safety
council, postoffice box 614, Med

Seamen Rescued
From Atlantic
Boston (U.R) A Coast
Guard cutter Tuesday night res
cued nine frostbitten seamen
from a two-day ordeal in a wat
erlogged open boat 175 miles at
sea.
The men, crew members of
the 151-foot coastal freighter
Patricia Sweeney of Yarmouth,
N.S. drifted helplessly in near
freezing temperatures for 44
hours. Their coal cargo shifted
and capsized the vessel during
a bowling gale Sunday nignt.
They were unable to give a
distress signal and barely had
time to scramble into their life
boat before the ship "went down
like a stone."
Lifeboat Partially Filled
Their open lifeboat, though
well stocked with supplies, was
partially willed with water
from rain and sleet storm and
heavy seas.
The men, all from Nova Sco
tia c.i Newfoundland, were pick
ed up by the Coast Guard cutter
Castle Rock just after dusk. The
cutter had left its ocean weath
er station to tow the disabled
Boston fishing trawler Jane B.
home when it was spotted by
the m'en.
First Mate Fred Rodenheiser,
56, of Lunenberg, N.S., said by
radio that two of the men, forc
ed to leave the sinking ship bare
foot, were suffering from badly
frostbitten feet and the Coast
Guard said another of the res
cued seamen had a fractured
ankle. The Coast Guard said all
of the men would be hospitaliz
ed for treatment of exposure
and frostbite on their arrival
at Boston.

EAST EVANS CREEK-MEADOWS
County Road
By MRS. NELLIE BERGMAN
East Evans Creek-Meadows
Members of the county court
visited this area last Tuesday
on a routine inspection of county
roads.
It was learned that work on
the summit of Meadows road is
planned for some time in the
future, and that work on the
East Evans creek road, near the
old covered bridge, will continue
when weather permits. Road
work in this area will be in
cluded in an overall three-year
road improvement program
planned by the county, accord
ing to Engineer Paul Rynning,
but until surveys are made to
determine costs, no definite
starting date can be set.
