Schrunk Walks Out on Lie Detector Test;
Describes It As 'Fishing Expedition'
Washington UP) Mayor
Terry D. Schrunk of Portland
said today he walked out on a
lie detector test because it was
a "fishing expedition" by the
Secret Service and Senate Rack
ets Committee aimed at " mak
ing me flunk."
Schrunk answered under oath
today six of the questions he
balked at answering to the lie
detector. But he told the com
mittee they were "tricky'' ques
tions designed to trip him. The
questions involved whether
Schrunk was acquainted with or
had received money from under
world figures.
Chairman John L. McClellan
(D.-Ark.) sternly asked if
Schrunk wanted to leave in the
record a charge that the commit
tee staff could influence the Se
cret Service.
"I do, yes," said the 43-year-old
mayor.
"That is a serious reflection on
the Secret Service," McClellan
said. "I don't believe that is cor
rect." Accused of Taking Bribe
"I hope it's not correct," said
Schrunk. He said the statement
was "not a charge . . . it's a per
sonal opinion."
Schrunk walked out on the
partially completed test at Secret
Service headquarters Monday.
He had requested the test to sup
port his denial Friday of charges

lined up with some very tricky

making me flunk the test."

said today he has objected to
the manner in which Mayor
Terry Schrunk of Portland was
questioned by the Senate Rack
ets Committee.
Cleason said he had wired
Sen. John McClelian (D-Arkj
committee chairman, protesting
the "apparent hostile" attitude
of the committee in questioning
Schrunk.
The wire said in part, "con
trol by the rackets was ended
by the election of Terry D.
Schrunk. Thus, be fair and name
the characters who were con
trolled by the rackets prior to
the election of Terry Schrunk

son for this smear."

told the witness. "I can't think I
of any witness who has got him- j
self into a worse box than you j
have . . . I'm shocked and'
amazed that the mayor of a
great city . . . says he's not going ;
to take a test because he doesn't j
like the questions."

"An honest man trying to give
honest answers doesn't have to i
care what the questions are," ;
said Mundt.
Schrunk rejected an invita
tion from the committee to con
clude the lie detector test after
two senators said they "were try
ing hard to believe him."
"This is going to be settled in
the state courts" of Oregon," the
mayor said. "I'll stand on that."
Mundt retorted that the De
partment of Justice as well as
Oregon would be interested "be
cause questions of perjury seem
to be involved."
Mundt said he supposed that
Schrunk was better off than
Portland night club operator
Nate Zusman, who demanded a
lie detector test last week and
flunked it.

Zusman had denied under
oath a Portland madam's testi
mony that he encouraged her to
set up a bawdy house and then
shared the profits. The Secret
Service said after Zusman's test
that the results indicated "un
truthfulness." voice when you

Film To Be Shown
Despite Protests

A movie theater plans to begin
showing the controversial film
"Baby Doll" Wednesday, despite
a threatened half-year boycott
by Jersey City's large Roman
Catholic population.
Catholice priests throughout
HuJsop county have called upon
their parishioners to boycott the
Stanley - Warner theatre for six
months if it shows the film.
More than 60 priests distrib
uted postcards to their congre
gations, urging them to mail pro
tests to the theater. . Theater
Manager Jules V. Daniels' office
said the theater has received
"just a few" protests in the
mail.
The theater management said,
however, that "Baby Doll's" or
iginal booking for several weeks
has been cut to one week, and
that the film would be shown to
adults only.

New York (U.R) Charles Van
Doren, whose amazing knowl
edge catapulted him into tele
vision fame, was dethroned Mon
day night by a woman lawyer
and the king of Belgium.
To console him, however, the
31-year-old Columbia College in
structor had S129.000 the re
mains of his winnings after his
defeat by Mrs. Vivienne Wear
ing and the largest pool ever
raked in on a single quiz pro
gram in the history cf television.
Mrs. Nearing not only knock
ed the S4,400-a-year instructor
off the show, but she took a
$14,000 bite out of the S143.000
pile Van Doren had amassed
over 13 previous appearances on
the quiz show, NBC-TV's
'Twenty One." Van Doren, son
of Pulitzer Prize poet Mark Van
Doren, had built up his stake
by defeating 13 other challen
gers.
Three Previous Ties
Van Doren said after the show
that he expected to keep "some
what more than S30.000 . . .
about S35.000, maybe, of his
$129,000.
Van Doren, who had tied Mrs.
Nearing in three previous
rounds on the quiz game which
is based roughly on the card
game, "blackjack," tripped on a
question about kings.
Mrs. Nearing correctly named
the kings of Denmark (Frede
rick), Norway (Haakon), Sweden
(Gustavus), Belgium (Baudouin),
Jorgan (Hussein and Iraq (Feis-
al).
Van Doren got them all ex
cept the king of Belgium. Sweat
ing visibly and clutching a hand
kerchief, Van Doren mumbled,
"That's Leopold's son ... I know
his name ... I know his name."
Pays Off 'Debt'
As time ran out, the 31-year-old
instructor said: "I guess 1
don't know him. I know it's not
right, but Leopold."
The "king" question had a
point value of 10 which gave
Mrs. Nearing a score of 10 and
Van Doren a score of nothing

Rumors Are Correct

actress Sheree North, 25, has
confirmed that her "secret mar
riage" of two years to Holly
wood music publisher John (Bud)
Freeman, 39, has gone on the
rocks just as secretly.
The blonde star confirmed re
luctantly Monday rumors that
Freeman had moved out of their
home a month ago. She describ
ed it as a "friendly separation"
and said there were no immed
iate plans for divorce.
Miss North and Freeman were
married in Quartzsite, Ariz. Feb.
20, 1955, but did not announce
their marriage until six months
ater. Miss North has a seven-year-old
daughter. Dawn, by a
previous marriage.

Doren in the game, 17-10.
The 30-year-old blonde stop
ped the game right there even
though she didn't know Van
Doren's score. She collected the
seven point difference in their
score multiplied by $2000 per
point, the stakes they were play
ing for in their fourth round.
"I was trying to out-maneuver
a maneuverer." laughed Mrs.
Nearing after the show. "I guess
I did."
Right after a news confer
ence, Van Doren paid off his
first debt. He returned five cents
he had borrowed two weeks
ago from Richard Neuwiler, an
NBC page. Neuweiler had lent
Van Doren the nickel so he
could buy a candy bar

Monmouth: "That's something
we've been trying to determine
for 300 years."
And Sen. Warren Gill of
Lebanon offered: "On a farm

Generally speaking, observers
said, in western Oregon, it's a
farm. In eastern Oregon, it's a
ranch. And in southern Cali
fornia if it's over half an acre,
