Prepared to Teach
When a badge is earned the
girl is crenared to serve and
teach that skill. !
Adventuring in the arts Is sub
divided into arts and crafts, lit- j
erature and dramatics, and mu-:
sic and dancing. Divisions of
citizens here and abroad are
community life and international j
friendship. Nature, out-of-doors '
and sports and games make up '
the divisions in fun and explor
ation in the out-of-doors. In you
and your home the subdivisions
are agriculture, health and safe-
ty, and homemaking.
The field of arts and crafts
presents a choice of 16 badges, 1
ranging from architecture and
basketry to glass and pottery. In
each bad?e the girl learns some
thing of the history of that sub
ject and uses original ideas to
carry out the required work. i
Eleven Subjects j
In literature and dramatics the
girl may choose from 11 sub
jects including dramatic appreci
ation, journalist and story-teller.
She might be required to take
part in a dramatic presentation
during the earning of some par
ticular badge in this field.
The field of music and dancing
give a choice of six badges such
as folk dancer, group musician
and music appreciation. Commu
nity life from citizens here and
abroad presents 10 badges, in
cluding my community, aviation
and radio and television. Inter-;
national friendship give! a
choice of eight subjects ranging
from language, and pen pal to
world neighbor.
In the field on nature 14
badges may be considered cover
ing such subjects as cat and dog,
conservation, reptile and amphi
bian, tree, star and weather.
Badges may be earned for
back-yard camper, explorer, and
out-door cook in the out-of-doors
field, which lists seven. Sports
and games gives a choice of 11
badges ranging from athlete,
canoing and horsewoman to life
saver.
Popular Field
One of the most popular fields,
according to the numbers of
badges earned, is the homemak
ing from you and your home.
Eleven badges are offered rang
ing from homemaker, dressmak
er, and foods to good grooming
and handy woman. Health and
safety lists 12 badges covering
child care, first aid. home nurse,
and public health. In agriculture
nine badges are offered, includ
ing animal raiser, beekeeper,
home gardener and landscaper.
Girls earning badges follow in
structions given in the Girl
Scout Handbook. Under each
badge title will be a list of from
eight to 15 things from which to
choose to earn the badge. From
these the girl chooses six to 10
activities listed as necessary to
complete the badge work.
For example, in the dog end
cat badge the instructions read
"Do ten of these activities in
cluding the five that have a
star." One of those starred says
"'Find out your state and
county laws and municipal ordi
nances governing the ow-nership
of dogs or cats in at least three
of the following; licensing, hu
mane treatment, leashing, curb
ing, loss or thrft. desertion, pois
oning, strays." The dog and cat
badge lists 14 activities.
In each major division there
are badges that only Junior high
members or older may earn
Such badges are public health,
first aid. and home nurse from
the field of health and safety in
you and your home.
Nearly 40 per cent of the na
tion's milk is ued for drinking
and cooking. The rest is used
for butter, cheese, ice cream and
other products ranging from

Girl Scout Council.
The sale is the council's an
nual approved fund-raising
event, proceeds from which help
support the camping program
for the council which includes
eight day-camps, the troop camp
site at Grayback, and the estab
lished camp, Low Echo at Lake
of the Woods. By selling cookies
the troops also aid their own
troop finances as a portion of the
price remains with each troop
selling cookies.
Each girl selling cookies is a
good ambassador for Girl Scout
ing if she is neat, quiet, accurate
and courteous, and she will gain
valuable experience in meeting
people and situations during the
sale.
Cooperative Effort
Girl Scouts believe that par
ticipating in a cooperative effort
Which benefits all is an im
portant part of Scouting. The
girls learn to be businesslike and
to handle money accurately.
The national council of Girl
Scouts feels that when Girl
Scouts are given an opportunity
to raise money for their own
troop or council, or for other
welfare organizations, the local
Girl Scout council must make
sure that girls are trained, di
rected and supervised by respon
sible adults, and must take final
responsibility for all money held
in the name of Girl Scouting.
It is believed that it is desir
able for Girl Scout troops to
have the experience of raising
and spending money, since learn-

part of a Scout's education.
All Ages
All ages of Girl Scouts take
part in the cookie sale, but it is
recommended that those of
Brownie age sell only to family
or friends, in their own neighbor
hoods. Junior high age troops
and Senior -Scouts may have
booths in stores or reputable
public buildings such as libraries
or banks.
Troop leaders secure their
cookie supply through the neigh
borhood chairman in their dis
trict, who secures the neighbor
hood supply from the district
cookie sale chairman. Cookie
depots are maintained by the
chairmen, and they are respon
sible for alll sales in her district.
Medford chairmen are Mrs. Rob
ert Sleeter, with the depot in her
home at 39 South Berkley way, ;
and Mrs. C. F. Risse, with a depot
at the Medford hotel Richfield
Station, 416 West Main st.
Mrs. Risse is responsible for
Washington - Jefferson, Lincoln
Jackson, Jacksonville-Westside,
and Griffin Creek neighbor-,
hoods. Mrs. Sleeter's depot will i
serve St. Mary's, Roosevelt-Lone j
Pine, Central Point, Hedrick-Mc-Loughlin-Senior
High, Phoenix, .
Howard, and Elk-Trail neighbor- j
hoods. '
Plans are bing made for the
annual spring council meeting
of the Rogue Valley Area Girl
Scout Council at Bellview
Grange in Ashland, March 20,
from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Grange hall is south of
Ashland. To locate the hall drive
Highway 99 to Tolman Creek
rd. and turn left. The hall is on
Tolman Creek rd. just beyond
the Bellview school.
There will be a $1.25 luncheon
served at noon. Reservations
must be made in advance at the
council office, 500 East Main St.,
Medford, telephone 2-5912, by
noon Monday, March 18. Persons
making reservations are respon
sible for the reservation if not
cancelled by noon, March 18.

FFECTIVE use of the leisure time of our youngsters is the key
to responsible adulthood. Failure of the citizens of a community
to meet this issue can lead in wrong directions.
Because Girl Scouting for so long has proved itself one of the
most constructive operations In our community, it has become an
accepted part of our life, especially in the area of building a better
community.
It is now apparent that while hundreds of eligible girls are avail
able to join in the Girl Scout program here, they are being deprived
of the opportunity for lack of woman-power. Leadership in adequate
numbers is not available always. Thus, Girl Scout Week is being ob
served to awaken many capable women in the community to the
exciting opportunities for them in this important service.
May we join with others in urging you, if you have any time free
for this work, to contact the local Girl Scout office and inquire how
