Is That So?
Of all animals.
insects alone
have adapted themselves to
evrrj climatic and topographical
condition. You'll encounter them
Qjlmost everywhere, crawling,
creeping, and flying up to alti
tudes exceeding 15.000 feet;
from the north polar regions to
the Antarctic on glaciers, in hot
springs, in fresh and brackish
waters, and even in caves where
daylight never penetrates.
Because they have been so
inextricably associated with
m either as friend or foe
orwneutral they have become
a very part of his thinking and
talking as witness the many
proverbs pertaining to insects
which I gathered from Dr. Lucy
W. Clausen's fascinating book,
Insect Fact and Folklore (Mac-
millan, N.Y.) Here are some
check off those which you have
met before:
The butterfly that brushes
against thorns will tear its
wings. The beetle is a thing of
beauty in the eyes of its mother.
Kneehigh to a grasshopper. The
cockroach is always wrong when
arguing with a chicken.
About the common fly seem
ingly most pestiferous but ex
tremely important as a pollin
ator there are many. Even a
lion must defend himself against
the flies. Flies are easier caught
with honey than vinegar. Where
there is honey, there will the
flies swarm. No fly gets into a

Senate Adopt?
o
Resolution 26
Salem SU.R) The Oregon Sen
ate, after an expression of mis
giving by some of its members,
has adopted Senate joint resolu
tion 26 to create a pioneering
Senate interim committee to in
vestigate any problems that
might arise between sessions.
Sen. Warren Gill of Lebanon
said the, matter was experimen
tal, but one purpose was to de
termine if such a committee
could not cut down on the num
ber, of interim committees sub
sequently needed.
Sen. Monroe Sweetland of
Milwaukie expressed apprehen
sion that the resolution was too
broad, giflng the committee the
right to examine all things.
Sen. Donald R. Husband of
Eugene said he feared it would
be a full time job for members
of the committee. He said the
scope was so wide he didn't
think the committee would be
able to do any good on anything
But Sen. Walter J. Pearson of
Portland pointed out that this
would be merely an experimen
tal move and if it was found
unsatisfactory in any way, it
could be abandoned at the next
session of the Legislature.
On ?inal passage, only seven
senators vgted against the reso
lution. Buy

Even more significant for the aver

definitive contest for cars in the
low-price field. These were single

automatic transmissions, the most
popular kind of car Americans
buy. And what happened here?
Take a look at the results:
dealers jjHilj'Jrjfljjg display this famous trademark
year-old Irish-bred horse named1
Royal Flush which had a repu
tation of being a bad actor.
Enoch W i s h a r d, trainer for

having himself. When the thor
oughbred was entered for the
Stewards Cup race at Goodwood,
Wishard, a laconic fellow, simp
ly said to Gates, "Your horse is
ready." Royal Flush opened at
40 to 1. Gates backed him down
to 2 to l. Ridden by Johnny
Reiff. Royal Flush won by five
lengths. Gates won about a mil
lion dollars. Then a London
sportscribe referred to him as
"Bet-A-Million" Gates and the
nickname stuck.
In A Few Words
"With women," observed Ar
thur Brisbane, "life really begins
at 50. At 50 a woman has more
brains, more heart, more cour
age, more energy than at any
other age; and at all ages woman
has more real courage, mental
and spiritual courage than man."

not, ask the man where you buy

about Nicephore Niepce, includ

he should be ashamed of him
