Grants Pass Man
Refused Guilty Plea
Portland (U.PJ A 56-year-old
Grants Pass man was turned
down in his attempt to plead
guilty to a charge o mail theft
in Federal Court here yesterday.
Russell B. Garris hesitated
briefly before answering quilty
to a charge of taking three let
ters from a residential mail box.
Judge Gus Solomon asked if
he had been pressured to make
the plea. Garris denied that he
had.
Th court appointed attorney
stated that there had been a
question of wilfulness and he
had left the plea up to Garris'.
Judge Solomon declined to ac
cept the plea and set trial for
March 19.
Garris was arrested for the
theft of letters from the mailbox
of a minister.
Douglas Court Drops
Manslaughter Charge
Roseburg (U.R) A charge of
manslaughter against 18-year-old
Rex Blankenship of Myrtle
Creek, Ore., was dismissed yes
terday in Douglas county Circuit
Court here on the motion of Dis
trict Attorney Robert Stultz.
Blankenship had been charged
with manslaughter following the
death last Aug. 29 of 34-year-old
Mrs. Josephine Clara Moore,
mother of six children. She was
struck by a bullet as she stood
on the back porch of her Myrtle
Creek home. .Blankenship was
hunting in the area.

Indictment Resubmitted
Hillsboro (U.R) An indict
ment against former Washing
ton County Judge Harry Seabold
charging bribery was ordered re
submitted to the county grand
jury yesterday after a defense
demurrer was sustained.
The indictment against Sea
bold had charged him with "re
ceiving and agreeing to receive
a bribe, being a judicial officer."
The charge stemmed from an al
leged real estate transaction.

Aqueduct To Help
Southwest Suggested
Dallas (U.PJ A Dallas man
has suggested a gigantic Roman
type aqueduct that would carry
water 1,500 miles from the Great
Lakes to the drought-stricken
Southwest.
Al Boerner, a Navy veteran
with a background in electron
ics, radar and engineering, said
it would be like an ancient Ro
man aqueduct. It would also
serve as a freeway.
Basically, the aqueduct would
be equipped with four huge
water tubes which could handle
36,000 acre-feet of water in 24
hours, and on the top would be
an eight-lane highway.
The water-tubes, when not in
use, would be used as freight
carriers. This would mean using
large capsules, controlled by
electronic relays.
The drawback to such an op
eration is financial, Boerner ex
plained. He figures it would cost
$500,000 a day to operate and
about one-third of the national
S33 billion national road pro
gram. However, he said it could
gross $2,000,000 a day. '
Boerner has been planning the
project for some three years and
has been working on a model
to present to President Eisen
hower. He added that water tafc
en from Lake Michigan or Lake
Superior through the waterduct
would not be missed since they
are on the rise.
