tion, said that state boards and
commissions were growing at
"an alarming rate."
He said there were 88 boards
and Commissions in 1954, 97 by
1955, and that 15 more were
added after the 1955 legislative
session.
At this rate it won't be long
before we have more than 200
boards aid commissions," Jonas
said. Bills to create a dozen
more commissions are now be
ing considered by the. Legisla
ture. Rep. Shirley Field, Portland
Republican, objected to the in
terim study on grounds it was
a "delay by study" in dealing
with the state's commission prob
lems. Rep. Don Willner, Portland
Democrat, said an inte.im study
would result in economy by con
solidating duplicative services,
would increase efficiency of state
government and make it more
responsible to the people.
Must Justify Existence
Secretary of State Mark Hat
field commented on passage of
the resolution that "any board
or commission which cannot
justify its existence as the most
efficient and economical way in
which to administer a reasona
able function of government
should be abolished or consolid
ated with another agency."
He protested, however, that
a House committee was studying
later this week a bill to abolish
the State Board of Control with
out a study.
"The Board of Control may
not be the best way to administer
our state institutions but it cer
tainly merits as much study and
consideration as does any other
agency," Hatfield said.

ard Handbury and Mrs. Fred
Palmer, all of Rogue River, for
the Rogue River Community
Kindergarten, it was reported
today.
The kindergarten, and in
dependent non-profit c o r p o ra
tion, is now in its second year
of operation and has moved
from the First Presbyterian
church building to 206 Main st.,
Rogue River formerly known as
the Bayless building.
Fourteen children are enrolled
in the kindergarten and ages
range from 4 to 6. Instructor is
Mrs. Doris Burkett, Rogue River.
The kindergarten hours are from
8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday
through Friday and the sessions
are held on a regular school
year basis from September to
June.
Officers of the corporation are
Mrs. Dick, president: Mrs. Palm
er, treasurer; and M r s. lone
Jones, also of Rogue River, secre
tary. Mrs. Handbury served as
secretary until an election about
a month ago.

day, blocking at least two major
trans-continental highways and
ceasing numerous secondary
loutes.
A six-inch accumulation of
snow was reported at Cheyenne
Wyo., early today, and seven
inches were added to the snow
pack at Leadville, Colo.
State patrols closed U.S. 30
in southeast Wyoming and U.S
87 in northeast Colorado and
southeast Wyoming during the
night because of snow, ice and
poor visibility.
