UP FOR BUCKET Jim Heath o'f Phoenix high goes up for a
lay-up in the third quarter of the Pirates District 6 A-2 play-
off basketball mix with Glide here last night. Arm out
stretched in futile effort to stop him is Wayne Kennaday (25)
of the Wildcats. Poised for a possible rebound are John
Livingston (15), Glide, Jim James (20). Phoenix, and Allen
Smith (31) Glide. Phoenix won 55 to 48.
Pirates Trip Glide
En 6 A-2 Play-Off
Phoenix high, with torrid
shooting, built up a bulging first
half command and survived a
persistent, stirring upward
surge with even hotter firing
by the Wildcats through the
last two quarters to upend Glide
here last night in a District
6 A-2 championship encounter.
Score was 55 to 48 in the
first conflict in a two-of-three
series. The two subdistrict titlists
clash again at Glide on Satur
day night. Third game, if nec
essary, will be battled Monday
evening on a neutral floor.
Phoenix was in front all the
way at the Hedrick gym last
night The Pirates, with Gary
Simmonds, Jim James and Doug
Witte providing the marksman
ship, produced a sizzling .5-1 1
shot average from the field. Jim
Stout and Jim Heath combined
with the foregoing trio in tena
cious, methodical aggressiveness
and Phoenix headed by 19
points, 31 to 12 at halfUme.
'Cats Claw Back
But in the second half the
Wildcats, who were cool and a
bit sluggish in the first two pe
riods, came clawing back fierce
ly. Sparked by rugged cousins,
Dick and .Allen Smith, with
their shooting and backboard
play, the No. 6 and No. 9 rated
Glide quintet, ba'nged at the
hoop with scorching .566 effec
tiveness and threatened serious
ly to catch the Pirates in the
final minutes of the fracas.
Glide, which fired a feeble
.156 in the first two panels, out
scored Pirates over the full haul
from the field 22 to 21 and it
was at the free throw line where
Phoenix got its margin of tri
umph. The Pirates took advan
tage of 10 Wildcat personal in
fractions to make 13 out of 18
gifter tries. Only four personals
were ' tooted on Phoenix. Dick
Smith made all four Glide free
points out of six Wildcat at
tempts. It was the scoring of high

and had 14 points for the game.

Simmonds and James each put
in 15 points for Phoenix. Sim
monds hit three of his first four
field casts, all from consider
able distance from the hoop and
had six field goals in all during
the Phoenix splurge over the
first two cantos. James had four
buckets and Witte three during
this stage of the hassle.

points during the first four min

Phoenix spread to nine points
at 37 to 28. Phoenix scrapped
back to go back up to 13-point
control at the end of the stanza,
45 to 32 and upped it to 16 at
48 to 32 in the fourth.
Then the Wildcats went into
a full court press which nurried
and harried the Pirates. After
a 52 to 36 standing with four
minutes left in the game. Allen
Smith pumped in three field
goals and Dick Smith two to
slice the Phoenix edge to just
six tallies at 52 to 36. One min
ute, 10 seconds were left to play.
Piralet aHng On
The Pirates were desperately
hanging on with ball control at
this stage, although a couple
shots from mid or long range
had enhanced the opportunities
of Glide. With a half-minute to
go James swished a 15-footer
and was fouled. He made his
free shot for 55 to 46. Dick
Smith's long jumper with 18
seconds left was the final bucket
of the fray.
In the first half it was much
a matter of Glide shooting and
missing and Phoenix getting the
rebound, going down court and
setting up a good shot at the
bucket. A good number of the
Phoenix field goals were from
a distance.
Phoenix rpnde 13 out of 24
shots from the field in the first
! half and over the route had 21

; of the rebounds over the first

Glide ruled 34 to 25.

one victory in its games with

next week. And the Black Tor
nado is still in the running for
the Southern Oregon conference
and District 6 pennants.
Iba said that the Grizzlies will
open tonight with their usual
five, Jack Eberhart, Jack Tobi
asson, Mel Dailey, Mark Fitch
and Albert Hartwell. He report
ed that the Ashlanders are eager
and have looked good getting
ready for the Tornado series
this week.
Tobiasson Recovered
Also the Grizzlies expect to be
in better shape physically than,
they were when they upset loop
pacing Klamath Falls last week.
Tobiasson has recovered from a
bum shoulder which handi
capped him in the Pelican series.
He will have a couple of fingers
taped but probably won't be hin
dered much.
Iba said that aim of the Griz
zlies is at least a split with all
members of the conference in
the final half of the season. The
possibility of blasting the Torna
do out of contention looks re
mote but the series will find the
Grizzlies trying.
Coach Frank Roelandt indicat
ed that his squad is healthy and
rested after having no games
for two weeks. Likely starters
are Dick Copple, Dick McLaugh
lin, Neil Plumley, Dick Puhl and
Larry Perkins.
Medford is trying for a third
straight journey to the A-l Ore

runner-up for the last two years.
