In the Day's News
By FRANK JENKINS
Lrt's take a realistic look to
day at the Israeli situation. On
the fact of it, it looks explo
sively dangerous. But we must
remember that the whole Mid
dle East business is in the NE
GOTIATION stage.
In important negotiations,
more or less everybody con
cerned is apt to run bluffs from
time to time in order to find out
what the other fellow will or
won't stand for.
It's just possible that is what
Israel is doing.
IVHAT will Ike do about it?
" (You have noted, of
course, that the President has
cut short his Georgia "vacation"
to return to Washington for
talks with State Secretary
Dulles.)
That remains to be seen.
But a couple of weeks ago the
important Egyptian newspaper
reported that President Eisen
hower had told King Saud (who
was then visiting here) that
Israel is "here to stay." The
President was quoted as saying:
"The United States will not
stand idly by and see Israel dis
appear, and the Arabs will
HAVE TO KNOW THAT
CLEARLY." "
The Egyptian correspondent
added that Mr. Eisenhower told
the Saudi Arabian king that the
United States will not permit
Israel to expand at the expense
of her Arabian neighbors or
commit injustices against them.
ALL THIS has to be taken on
the word of an Egyptian cor
corpondent, but it sounds like
Ike. As long as he can do so,
President Eisenhower prefers to
use mild and courteous methods,
but in the pinches he can talk as
bluntly as the next one.
It is hard to escape the con
clusion that the Middle East situ
ation is reaching the point where

blunt talk is called for. If Presi
dent Eisenhower was correctly
quoted by the Egyptian news
man, it seems probably that he
will tell the Arabs and the Israe
lis that they will have to learn
to live with each other or else.
Well, we're not going to move
in and TAKE OVER the Middle
East. We want no colonial em
pires. We had our fling at that
in the Philippines, and we want
no more of it. All we want is a
world we can live in and do
business with.
And we can't permit Russia
to move in and take over the
strategic Middle East, with its
vast supply of oil. That would be
suicidal.
About the only middle ground
between these extremes is to
create if such a thing is pos
sible a situation in which the
Jews and the Arabs can go on
living with each other.
That will take some doing.
but it looks like it's worth a try.
