Loss of Much Hair
A few elderly women are very
unhappy because they are get
ting bald in patches. Other per
sons, both men
and women,
have lost all
the hair from
off their head
and their
body. Some of
them lost it
after a fright.
For instance;
a mother
brought m e
her boy of ten who had seen a
terrible accident in the street;
he had seen people bleeding and
dying and it had upset him
much. Soon afterwards, the hair
on his head turned white and
then it began to fall out in hand
fuls. Another woman, bald as a
door-knob, told me that she lost
her hair a while ago when, for
a few months, she was insane.
Evidently, strong mental shocks
can cause hair to fall out. But
sometimes I will see a person
who lost all his (or her) hair at a
time when there did not seem to
be any cause for mental conflict.
Then I cannot guess what the
cause was.
In some of these cases, the
hair comes back again within
three months, without the per
son's having done anything about
it. If I were suddenly to lose
all my hair I certainly wouldn't
go to an advertising hair-quack.
I would be sure that he would
not know any more about grow
ing hair than I do, and I have
never been able to learn much
about it! My only hope would
be that as the dead hairs fell
out, new ones would be growing
up to take their place.
Rubbing Might Help
If the little follicle in which
hair grows is destroyed by dis
ease, I can't imagine how any-
Observance Planned
For Save Vision Week
National Save Your Vision
Week will be celebrated March
3-9, with the Southern Oregon
Optometric Society sponsoring
the local observance, officials of
the society have announced.
"Adequate Vision for School
Achievement" will be the slo
gan in honor of the centennial
of the National Education asso
ciation, an organization of more
than 600,000 American teachers.
Optometrists in this area are
scheduled to appear before Parent-Teacher
associations and
other audiences to explain the
connection between "Eyes and
I-Q", according to Dr. R. L.
Stephen, chairman of the so
ciety. The Save Your Vision Week
committee for southern Oregon
consists of Dr. G. HI. Revel,
Ashland, Dr. T. C. Anderson,
Medford, and Dr. S. C. Dippel,
Grants Pass.
Army Admits Wrong
On Couple of Things
Washington (U.R) The Army
and Air Force cleared their
throats the other night and said
it seems they were wrong about
a couple of things.
The Air Force said its C132
transport plane, publicized last
week in an official announce
ment as a "new giant of the air
ways," is really only a wooden
mock-up and may never be
turned into a flying machine.
The Army said it has no In
tention of taking those stars off
the license plates of limousines
used by generals and replacing
them with simple letter "X's."
That idea got abroad last week
but the Army said it was all a
misinterpretation.

"Where the Fit Is Guaranteed"
thing can ever bring back the
hair. It is conceivable that, in
some cases, it might help to rub
the scalp frequently in an at
tempt to bring more blood into
it. If it could be shown that the
person lacked sufficient secre
tion from the thyroid gland, it
would help to give some thyroid
substance, but I practically never
see a person who has lost his or
her hair because of any definite
defect in the function of any
gland of internal secretion, such
as the thyroid, ovary, pituitary
or adrenal.
I do know one thing, and that
is that Better Business Bureaus
are fighting the hair quacks.
The managers of these bureaus
tell me that many of these
quacks are rapacious crooks
who, when they get hold of
some young man worrying about
his baldness, scare him badly,
and then, for months, keep get
ting out of him every spare dol
lar he can lay his hands on.
The quack guarantees a "cure,"
but when the lad, disappointed,
sues to get his money back, the
quack's lawyer keeps continu
ing the case until the victim gets
tired of going to court and thus
losing a day's work; and he gives
up.
Dr. Alvarez hopes his readers
will understand that it would be
impossible for him to answer
requests for information or to
attempt to diagnose by mail.
