Vaccine Urged (or
Pregnant Women
New York ,U.R A new sci
entific study of polio-and-the-pregnant-woman
is going to
make medical science even more
eager for all women of child
bearing age to have the Salk
anti-polio vaccine.
The study was made by Dr.
Mila E. Rindge, epidemiologist
of the Connecticut State Depart
ment of Health. Its most import
ant finding was that pregnant
women are even more suscep
tible than had been thought.
It showed also that after the
age of 15, females are more sus
ceptible than males. From 1951
through 1955, 2,167 polio cases
were reported to the depart
ment. Of that number. 456 were
females over 15 and 79 per cent
of them 17.3 per cent of the
total number of cases were
pregnant.
Since in the general popula
tion, according to accepted sta
tistics, only seven per cent of
females between 20 and 40 are
pregnant at any given time, 17.3
per cent is an eloquent percent
age. It shows the pregnant wom
an is much more susceptible
than the woman who isn't.

Chancellor Denies
Adventist Students
Ordered Expelled
Eugene (U.R) Chancellor
John R. Richards of the State
Board of Higher Education said
today that there have been no
expulsions of Seventh Day Ad
ventists enrolled at the Univer
sity of Oregon dental school.
The statement was made in
answer to a news release from
the Seventh Day Adventist Ore
gon Conference executive com
mittee which asserted that "Ad
ventist students now will not be
admitted to the school unless
they first sign a statement giv
ing up their faith by attending
classes on Saturday, their Sab
bath." The release said Adventist
students had been expelled from
the dental school because of
their religious beliefs.
Special Classes Offered
Dr. Richards said that in the
1955-56 school year seven Ad
ventist students had been en
rolled at the school and declined
to attend Saturday classes. Fol
lowing a hearing before the
State Board of Higher Educa
tion, Dr. Richards said, special
classes were offered to the Ad
ventists so they would not have
to attend school on their Sab
bath. The Chancellor asid that later
the seven students voluntarily
transferred from the Oregon
school to a California college
that did not hold Saturday
classes. He said there had "defi
nitely not" been any expulsions.
The dental school, Richards
said, does not inquire about re
ligious affiliations of applicants
but that he believes there are
now no Adventists enrolled on
the Portland campus.
