Airlines Considering
'Moderate' Fare Hike
Washington (U.R) A i r
lines are considering a "moder
ate" fare increase because of
"constantly increasing costs."
Stuart G. Tipton, Air Trans
port association president, re
vealed the move Tuesday in a
speech describing the 550-mile
an hour jet passenger service to
be introduced in two or three
years. ,
He said 'the airlines cannot
continue to "swallow constant
ly increasing costs." while bus
fares have gone up 27 per cent
and rail fares by about 50 per
cent since 1938, he said, airline
fares have advanced "a little less
than three per cent."
Just before he spoke. Trans
World Airlines announced in
New York that it will petition
the Civil Aeronautics Board for
a 6 per cent increase in fares
effective April 1.

Face-Lifting
. Aging women sometimes ask
about face-lifting. In one type of
operation the skin over the
lower half of
the face is pul
led up and
f a s t e ned to
the tissues of
forehead just
above the
hair-line. This
tends to t a k e
out many of
the wrinkles.
A baggy chin
can be tightened up, and bags
can be removed from below the
eyes. An ugly nose can be re
modeled, and hairy moles can
be removed. The wise woman,
before having such work done,
should inquire and make sure
that the man to whom she plans
to intrust her face is an expert,
and a reliable and respected and
properly licensed surgeon.
Robbed and Did Not Know It
The other day a woman a
bunch of nerves who a few
months ago was well examined
at a big clinic and told that there
was nothing physically wrong
with her, told me that in her
wrath over this opinion she had
gone to a doctor who had said
she must have a hysterectomy
right away. He had operated on
her in his own little "hospital
in the back of his residence, with
an assistant also (she learned
later) kicked out of the County
Medical Society for shady prac
tices. She says she was on the
table four hours, for a simple
.operation that any competent
surgeon should have performed
in less than half that time.
Incidentally, most persons are
O&C Timber Receipts
Said Above Average
Portland U.R) The Interior
Department has revealed that
timber sales from Oregon and
California revested lands in
Western Oregon averaged $9 per
thousand more than prices paid
for other federal timber during j
the past three years. i
The department issued a spe- i
cial report prepared by Paul F. j
Graves of the New York Col-
lege ot forestry at Syracuse to
refute what it said were publish
ed statements claiming that O&C
marketing procedures had cost
the 18 O&C counties potential
revenues.
Director Edward Woozley of
the Bureau of Land Manage
ment said that if the timber had
been spld at prices comparable
to those paid for other federal
timber revenue would have been
nearly $16 million less than the
$54,900,000 actually realized.
German Offers Aid
To Dying American
Duesseldorf, Germany (U.R)
A German specialist offered
his medical help today to a dy
ing American creditei with
shooting down 29 German planes
in World War II.
Dr. Josef Evers said he be
lieves he can aid U. S. air ace
John Godfrey, who has been
told a rare disease, amyotrophic
lateral sclerosis, will kill him
within two years.
The 60-year-old doctor, a spe
cialist in the various forms of
sclerosis, said his treatment has
been successful in other cases
similar to Godfrey's if the pa
tient came under his care in an
early stage of the disease. God

inordinately proud when they
can - say that they were on the
operating-table for four or five
hours. It is true that there are
some extremely difficult opera
tions, like those on some brain
tumors, which require several
hours of painstaking work; but
ordinarily, when all that has to
be done is to remove an appen
dix or a womb or a gallbladder,
any good surgeon will do the
job in an hour or so. Most of this
time is taken up with opening
and closing the abdominal cav.
ity. In any fine hospital today
any would-be surgeon who
would start out spending four
hours getting out a womb would
soon be denied the facilities of
the operating-room. Such a man,
instead of making every move
count as an expert surgeon
does would be spending most
of his time fumbling aimlessly
about, uncertain what to do
next!
Proud of Operation
Not knowing all this, the wo
man I started to tell about is
very proud of "her marvelous
operation," and, although she is
now a worse nervous wreck than
she ever was before, she loves
her doctor and keeps bragging
about him because he "found
her trouble" and "did s o-m e
thing for her." It is true that the
over-long operation left her with
a pneumonia, but "with super
human efforts, he pulled her
through that.
All of which shows that a per
son who has been badly gypped
by a poor specimen of a doctor
may never know that she was
mistreated and robbed.
